Well what they actually state is that if you don't earn enough commission to get your average hourly rate over the minimum wage, they have to pay the remainder. But anyone doing that poorly at work wouldn't have a job for too long anyway!

Is there a biggish turnaround of staff then?

What does anyone reckon to the Tiverton range at Wickes. How good are the draw fronts at staying on, are they sturdy. Sainsburys homebase kitchens in the showroom seem to have draw fronts loose and not to be fitted too well, any recommendations please.

Dont be put off by the showrooms as they probably receive a fair bit of abuse. I pulled off a drawer front in wickes when i pulled it out! We ended up with Canterbury style solid oak from Wickes. The actual drawers are pretty solid. Soft close mechanisms as standard that let you reach to the very back of the drawers, metal sides and decent bottom and back panels. The drawer fronts clip into place but you'd have to really yank it hard to pull them off. Overall build quality of the kitchen is pretty good.
Incidentally sainsbury's sold off homebase in 2000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homebase#History

I've been there 3 years now. Graduated from uni, got a job to get some quick cash (MFI) while i look for a 'proper job' and ended up loving what i was doing! I've realised i love talking to people (much to their boredom most probably), and have a general 'knack' of sales. Now I can't think of a job i'd prefer to this, that earns me £27k for 30 hours a week! But that's cos i actually put the effort in...and don't attempt to B*** S*** customers. Manager's fall quickest, but salesman have a longer shelf-life as there are little in the way of educated replacements.

(I just hope they can crawl their way out of this poor delivery patch. As i say, the potential's there, but the execution's a tad shady!)

A good kitchen designer is a brilliant salesperson, IMO.

We spent four!! hours in MFI today designing two big kitchens. I've come out with two designs better than I could possibly have hoped for. One kitchen I really pleased with the price, one not so much, but I'm hoping that an eventual call from the store manager will fix that for us. :o

Having someone sit there and allow you to design the kitchen is a fairly fruitless exercise. So boring and despite having bought a lot of kitchens, I'm only really learning how to put one together in a half decent fashion.

Ok, well the best thing you can do is wait. Give it 4 days and if you haven't had a call from the sales manager within that time then i'll be amazed (and he wouldn't be doing his job!). When either him (or the salesperson) rings from the store to see if you have made a decision then simply say the following...

"Well i've had a quote from Howdens..." (they used to be part of MFI, but are now separate- but still do very similar, and price comparible ranges) "...and they've quoted me..." (-then say your MFI quoted figure, minus approx 20% - yes, you can push it that far!), "so if you can match it i'll still be interested,". As soon as they hear that, i guarentee they'll do it. We never ask for a copy of the quote, especially if we hear that it's a price-match with Howdens. If they call your bluff then let me know. If you want me to get the best price then i'll be happy give the store a call for you.

    Very sweet thanks :)

I know we've got them down quite heavily already. We don't take the advertised sale prices as read. We're down to £7700 on a Kelmscott Oak kitchen 25 odd units? - the room is 15' x 18' wide. I'm slightly less impressed by the £4100 we've been quoted on the Space kitchen 12' x 15' room - I have a feeling that this prices matches my given budget more than minimum margins. Not sure.

We want to push this a bit harder if we can :o and I will be seeking out a comparable kitchen for the Space especially. Can't find another kitchen that is a patch on the Kelmscott anywhere.

Be aware that not only are most of the staff in MFI a bunch of mong's (with the odd few exceptions), they have a appalling success rate in delivering orders in full on time.
  • My godfather installs kitchens and he is always telling my Dad that the build quality and standard of the fittings are far superior on Ikea kitchens compared to Wickes. He is not impressed with Wickes kitchens, although thats not to say that they aren't good in other areas. Hope this helps.
