Can anyone indicate the cheapest way of upgrading:

    1. The Dimension 3000 from 256Mb to 512Mb
    2. The Inspiron 2200 from 256Mb to 512Mb.

    Thanks!

no, you don't get them with any Dell. There's a partition on the hard disk that holds the XP source.

I bought a Dimension 3000 a few months ago and I DID get an XP reinstallation CD - as well as separate discs with all the drivers for screens/printers/Works etc. The facility is there to recover the system using the HD but you could if you want reinstall again from scratch.
HOWEVER - I did buy that machine through the Small Business site, so maybe they have different options depending on the Home/Business purchase route?

And I did read the small print saying Dell would recoup their £70 if you cancelled any part of the order. But I think because I ordered a desktop and a laptop these are split into two orders and Dell can't link them together - so when I cancelled one they didn't remove the £70 discount from both, leaving me with the £70 discount still in place.

That's possible, I suppose. I've purchased 11 systems, both Dimension and Inspiron, through the Home route over the last 8 months and none of them have come with an XP CD.

Maybe if this one comes without an XP reinstallation CD I'll call them up and ask for one, since they've sent them before with my business order.

After looking Crucial seem to recommend just single 512Mb modules. I would like to use the 256Mb modules that will come with my new Dimension 3000 and Inspiron 2200 and just upgrade by another 256Mb each.

Presumably quite a few of us are going to be doing this..???
