Anyone looking for cheaper than Dell Dell stuff could look at https://www.aria.co.uk and https://www.rdc.co.uk
Both these sites seem to be Dell resellers and usually cheaper
Only time will tell if I am right or they are wrong

After looking Crucial seem to recommend just single 512Mb modules. I would like to use the 256Mb modules that will come with my new Dimension 3000 and Inspiron 2200 and just upgrade by another 256Mb each.

Presumably quite a few of us are going to be doing this..???

I believe this is the right way, as motherboards may not support single simms

I bought a Dell some months back and did more or less what you want to do. I used the supllied 256Mb and bought a 512MB from Crucial, which I put in together with the Dell supplied 256Mb.

It works fine like that, although I found the improvement in performance rather limited.

Here's a challenge for the Dell "Memory Experts" out there which I think would be really helpful to those people on this thread based upon the three most common machines bought from this offer. My opinion is that the most common upgrade will be to increase the memory supplied from 256Mb to 512Mb. So the challenge is to find the CHEAPEST compatible memory chips for the following machines....:

    1. Dell Dimension 3000 (2nd 256Mb chip added to pair with the original single 256Mb memory chip)
    2. Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop (2nd 256Mb chip added to pair with the original single 256Mb memory chip)
    3. Dell 6000 laptop (2nd 256Mb chip added to pair with the original single 256Mb memory chip).

Don't !!!!!! about trying to find the cheapest cos memory can be a real pain in the a$$ and can lead to all sorts of problems such as random lock ups etc and for the sake of a couple of quid (Which is all you'll manage to save by looking around anyway!!) I'd get the stuff from Crucial or have a look at Ebuyer who sometimes sell the Crucial memory cheaper than Crucial.
I've used Crucial many times when I've upgraded various systems for people and I've never had any issues with compatibility in those systems. It's free delivery if you spend over £30 and mine has always been delivered for the next day.
For all the Dell systems I've ordered I'm gonna buy my memory from Crucial so although I may spend a little more,I know I'm not going to have any come backs from people saying their systems are locking up etc!! :)

    Good luck

Or you could go onto Ebay where someone is selling brand new Dell 256MB PC2700 chips for £22 delivered.
I managed to get a few sticks when Dell had their mispricing offers a few months ago, which cost me about £12.50 a stick as I recall - you still see this appearing on Ebay from time to time. The Kosher stuff is in a pink wrapper with an orange Dell sticker on it.
For those thinking of cheap memory from Aria I have a money saving tip - DON'T BUY IT!! It'll only end in tears - pay the little bit extra and buy memory from a branded manufacturer like Crucial or Kingston.
You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.

My confirmation of order stated uki_customer_care@dell.com

You could also ring them 01344 860456 - though you will probably win a free phone call to India!

Thank you Nick for your response.
Presumably it would be ok (for the Dimension 3000) to buy a 256Mb 333MHz module from Crucial and use it alongside the supplied (333MHz) Dell 256Mb module?

thanks for all the tips on this thread,

went with the laptop and desktop combo, selling the desktop to a friend for £330 after I upgrade the memory & stick a floppy in for them. So all in all I got a wide screen laptop for under £300, again thanks, I have to question is this really a money saving forum as everytime I read, theres something I want to buy :)
