WOW
you're right - its startlingly quiet.
I've got used to the "roar" of my 2 yr old Evesham. When I first switched the dell on I thought it was in some sort of sleep mode. Turned on the screen confirming that it was indeed on. Turned off the Evesham - room went silent!
Even my wife, who was not amused with the delivery of yet another computer, was impressed.
:j (Daughter v happy with getting the dell 3000 that I bought a couple of weeks ago.) :j

All I have to do now is work out the best way to transfer all my files from my old machine to the new one - my wireless network seems to not want to allow me network access to shared files on the XP machines. I think it's that damn Firewall thingy getting in the way again!
I was thinking of putting an XFX 6600GT graphics card in this but because it's so quiet - and I mean REAL quiet - it would be a shame to stick a loud fan in there. I'm going to get one with a passive fan instead to keep this lovely and silent, so I won't have ringing in my ears when I go to bed.
Daughter quite pleased that she is going to get my old Athlon XP3200 - but she isn't getting the AGP 6600GT card - that's going on Ebay cos she doesn't play games online like I do.

I always thought my 3000 was really quiet when I got it. However, it seems to have picked up recently. I think that is due to how hot my room gets during the summer tho??
I bought a microland technology PC about 18months ago, which my parents use. Its got 512MB RAM, 80gb and a 2500 BARTON ATHLON. The fan is really loud however, and Ive always wanted to swap it for them, but I dont know if certain fans are / arent unsuitable. I also know that there is more than 1 fan in a PC.
Any Ideas how I can find out the best route please??
Also, are the A215 speakers really poor??
Ive got Creative P580 at the mo, and they are really impressive I believe. Was looking at getting another set but the cheapest is £36 to my knowledge at PC World.
Any ideas for decent alternatives at a good price? Or they are £23 refurbished from Ebay, but dont know whether refurbs are worth the hassle.
My PC will be here this evening
And Brian, cant you just burn a couple of DVDS with all your files on? Thats what I always do.
Cheers for any advice

If you're changing the fan on the processor you really need to check out some of the PC customisation websites for reviews and make sure you know what you're doing before you start - try www.custompc.co.uk as a starting point.
If you're just looking at a quieter case fan the you can get these in PC World - look for the Ultra Silent ones.
However, on my XP3200 I find that the processor fan and power fan both get noisy when my study gets hot, which is why this Dell is so amazing - it's VERY VERY quiet because it uses the new BTX design and has a passive heatsink on the processor.
I think the A215 speakers are OK - sound reproduction on this PC is pretty good, but I shall be using my old Antec 2.1 speaker system for this PC.
As for file transfer I've just set the 5100 up on my wireless network and am copying my files over using that - takes a bit of time but I want to be sure I only bring over the good stuff and dump all my old rubbish! You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
Cheers.. I will check out the custompc at lunchtime.
All I really wanted to do was change a fan (hoping its easy) and stop the whirring that annoys my parents so much.
Will give the speakers a go, and upgrade them for my girlfriend if they are not up to scratch. (She is having the 3000, but im keeping my old speakers, mouse etc)
I also hate my router, as it often stops me using explorer (page not found) once I start downloading using emule, bittorrents etc)
Glutton for punishment by buying another PC

Good news! :j Just had a phonecall asking if they can deliver tomorrow! (How long did I have to think about that one??!!) I'm so excited, and the computer isn't even for me  . Just need to sort out an all-in-one printer now and DS will be all set.[0

I had a strange problem with the nec drive.I was burning a iso file with DVD Decrypter, but the final burn wouldn't play back in the drive or in a 3520A drive.Though it did play ok in a dvd player.Anyway i updated the firmware to 103c and now its fine....0

Ordered my silent graphics card from Dabs - then I'll really be able to see if this is a better machine than my old Athlon. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0
