Don't know about the notebook but the 3000 probably won't play games very well unless you stick in a graphics card. Get a PCI Radeon 9250 from Ebuyer for less than £30 and should be fine.

will there be a slot to plug the graphics card in?
    Nice to save.

The 3000 has no AGP slot, so just buy a PCI card.
there are 3 PCI slots in the machine, 2 are definatley free for putting stuff in

you CAN buy fairly current PCI graphics cards, that WILL run the current games well, so don't worry about it

I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

My personal view is that if you just want it for net surfing and office you could get away with the most basic of new Dell laptops that you could buy for around £380 (the Dell 1200?)(see http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&kc=705&oc=N07125&m_30=33288). I have been using a 256Mb laptop with a much slower processor for the last 2 years with no problems. The only slight problem you may have is the hard disk size, which I believe comes in at just 30Mb. If you are downloading a lot of MP3's and keeping them stored on your hard disk then it may get full very quickly. having said that, my hard disk is 18Mb and I have loads of applications installed and download quite a few MP3's and my hard disk is still half-empty.

I'm sure others may encourage you to go for a higher spec laptop but that's my personal view!

You would be best looking for spec that suits your needs. For what you have stated more ram would prob be best. Look at the 2200 or 6000- unless you really want the 17" screen.

I am not familiar with this laptop but I would guess that it would not be particularly portable with that size screen. I guess 2 other options could be:

    1. Buy a desktop - this one (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&kc=705&oc=D07302A&m_1=18139&m_30=34888) comes in at £304 including a 17 inch TFT.

I assume however that you want a laptop, given your original spec. So you could do the folloiwing:

    2. The laptop as suggested in my original thread (or a slightly more upmarket one) PLUS buy a separate 17 inch monitor (from someone like Aria.Co.Uk). This is the solution that I use which meand that my laptop is trully portable but when using at home I still use my screen of choice. I also use a separate keyboard and mouse which you can also buy for a few pounds depending on exactly what you want.

As always it depends on exactly what you want it for. How often are you going to travel with it - if so do you mind lugging a large laptop. If you are not going to travel then a big laptop lump isn't so bad if it's going to sit on your desk all the time. But if you are going to use it for more than a while each day you may get fed up with using the laptop screen and keyboard, hence my suggestion for a separate monitor etc!!

Go to home, click on notebooks, click on Inspiron, then Inspiron 2200 is listed at left of page from £421 including delivery and VAT
