  • I've been told that if I buy from Dell with 256 MB of memory and then buy and install another 256 MB from another source that Dell will not honour their warranty. Due to the fact the system would not be configured as sold by Dell.

I am being told this by another supplier so please tell me is it fact or fiction?

Ummm....no idea, however, if there was a problem, just pull out the extra stick before you get dell to look at it. there are no seals on their cases and the side has a quick release catch so easy to do. Sounds like the "other supplier" is trying to get you to deal with them.

    hi,
i'm thinking of buying the dell 3000 and want to be able to play and copy cds and dvds. This option is the recommended option but im not sure from what it says on the site whether this option does what i need.

    can anybody help.

    thanks.

Having had a scout around I reckon that I'm going to buy the NEC 3540 DVD-RW. Loads of reviews of other models including the Pioneer 109 mentioned on CDFreaks. Here's the NEC one

I bought one of these a few weeks back, and i cant fault it. I bought an external enclosure for it so i can use it on either of my machines and take it to other peoples etc. I use DVD shrink and Nero reloaded and have not had any problems. I had the 3520 before and again had no problems (sold it with old machine). I know people who have had pioneer, sony etc burners and they have had problems with reading from discs and errors when burning but IMHO NEC tends to cause problem free burning.

Dont quote me on this, but i think they use Phillips technology (software etc) and as most of you will know Phillips invented the CD and its laser and thus tend to be the 'dogs bits', however NEC hardware is more robust than that of Phillips.

Tried to buy an Inspiron notebook at the offer price which expires today 27th, but
a new and much higher price came up when I tried to buy. I have emailed Dell, but no reply yet. Do they mean that the deal expires anytime they feel like on the date they give? I've always taken it to mean at the end of the day. What do you think?

Hi guys, I bought a Dell Dimension 3000 last week, I selected "no floppy required" as I thought I'd put my own in, however when I opened it I discovered there was no bay to put the floppy in. Does anyone know where I can buy the bay from.

    Thanks

I bought the NEC 3540 as mentioned above. It costs around £30-£35 if i recall. It is very easy to install, simply take out old writer and slide in new one and plug it in. Or if you want to turn an internal writer into an external writer you can buy an external enclosure that costs around £15-20 and that is extremely easy to install. You plug in it nip up a few screws and plug it in via USB A-B cable and XP picks it up straight away.

The NEC 3540 is dual layer and 16 x speed and burns rw/-r/+r, and i have been very impressed with mine.

Its not worth paying Dells prices for a dvd writer and it is certainly not worth paying someone to install it as you are just throwing money away. If you are really put off by installing a dvd writer i would recommend the external enclosure at it makes it very very easy to install and the bonus of this is that you can use it on any machine as it is removable and mobile (if you need it to be).

    I hope this helps.

P.S I bought my nec and external enclosure from https://www.autdirect.co.uk, which are based near me in Essex, but its not worth paying their delivery costs as they are expensive and it turns a cheap item into an expensive one. You could always try https://www.ebuyer.co.uk, i have found them to be quite cheap (customer service has been known to be poor, but i have never had any problms)

try www.ebay.co.uk, as there have been some of the enclosures on there, or it might be cheaper to buy the whole thing in black
