Can someone please explain why, when you buy frozen breaded fish such as Birds Eye, you can cook it straight from frozen, in fact in most instances they recommend that you DON'T defrost before cooking. However, if you buy fresh breaded fish in a sale and then freeze it yourself, you then have to defrost it for 24 hours before cooking.

I THINK it's something to do with flash freezing but I'd appreciate someone explaining how it works and why I can't cook stuff I've frozen myself without defrosting (which can be a pain if you are away from home as much as I am).

    Thanks

I'm not sure how it works but I cook food from frozen from time to time. The important thing is that the food is piping hot before you serve it. I think one of the problems is that some foods can be spoiled if the outside is cooked and ready to eat while the centre is still lukewarm.

I'd be inclined to use your frozen fresh fish (if you know what I mean) in the same way and cook from frozen.

Not sure how it works, I think Pink has explained it better than I can, but I also work away from home and often get home late at night, so I now meal plan and get something out of the freezer in the morning and defrost in the fridge (or sometimes I get out night before if a big item needing more defrosting ;) ) That way, it's ready to just cook when I get home.

Must admit, I'd be lost without the meal plans now, although we sometimes swap them around and stuff, it still saves having to think about what to cook, I know I have everything in for that particular meal as I've already checked when doing the plan and it stops me nipping to shops for extra bits and I know what I have to get out of the freezer for dinner now so there is always something there. I've got some celeriac ready to be harvested and was wondering if it can be frozen. Slice, blanch and freeze?

    Great, thanks!
  • Ive jsut taken out 400g of mince yesterday, left it to defrost on the side (still wrapped in food bag, came home from work last night and put it in the fridge with teh intent to use today.

It is still wrapped up, but it looks a bit brown, there is blood inside from where its defrosted but the colour is a bit off putting - its not pink more brown, is it still ok to use. Its been in my fridge a few months i think

is it ok to use? anythign i shoud check for?

I'm sure it will be ok Sammy, was it in a clear bag as exposure to light is usually what makes meat discolour like that especially once it's been frozen and then defrosted, I'd probably rinse the blood off, then give it a sniff and if it smells a bit iffy I'd bin it
  • Hi,

Can any of you tell me what vegetables can be frozen.

    I mainly use

Green, red, yellow & orange peppers
    Mushrooms
    Onion
    Corn
    Peas
    Carrots
    Parsnip
    Potatoes

and basically it would save me a lot of time if I could just get them out of the freezer after work already washed and chopped and good to go.

    Thanks

  • I know peppers swede onions and peas freeze well because I freeze them myself. I dont know about the other vegetables but as you can buy frozen carrots I assume they would be ok too.
