Yep, you can take a saw to it. If I bought a leg of lamb, my late OH used to take a saw to it, and if it's that big, rather than saw it just in half, he would make two joints and two leg chops out of it...two pieces cut from the middle about half an inch thick each with the two half legs taken from either side.

Thanks everyone! OH is going to have a go at it with a bread knife later!! Thanks also to the nice check out lady in asda who told OH to put back the small frozen joint and get a fresh one that was twice the size and cheaper!
  • We had one of those legs of lamb yesterday roasted did four of us including DD's BF. Tonight we had a lamb cobbler and I have made up enough to make a curry tomorrow and a sliced lamb in gravy meal that can be popped in the oven, easy enough for my DH and DS to reheat with some HM prepared roast potatoes and some frozen veg if I am in hospital.

I've been using Sunday's big roast lamb shoulder all week in different meals. Also did some slices for the freezer. Really easy to do. Just slice off the amount you would need to do another roast dinner for however many of you there are, put it in freezer-proof container....I just use shallow foil trays as they're reusable, then cover with gravy (make extra if you intend to do this), then freeze. Just heat up next time you want a 'free' roast dinner. It's absolutely fine...if anything, the meat is often more tender the 2nd time round. As long as it reaches piping hot temperature there is no problem with reheating meat this way.

I appreciate that information Foxgloves, I plan to go down this route more as I prefer sliced meat to chops etc...and though for one living alone(me)legs of lamb cost a lot initially if used in the way you mention it gives many meals and goes a long way...and though some meats are available cooked and sliced(ham, pork, turkey and chicken)lamb doesn't seem to be one of them...

Hi all, we love lamb here! not that we eat it often due to cost.
Today I have bought a half leg of frozen lamb from Iceland for Easter Sunday.£6.50
A whole leg was £14. Meat is sold by weight so will be diffrent in other shops.
We have a roast one day and then cold the next with jacket potato. Any left after that goes into sandwiches.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

You may have solved the problem for me...if I buy frozen and go to somewhere like Iceland...half a leg would probably be ideal size for me...will have to investigate further...its a bit of a nuisance using public transport but if I can use my new bus pass that I am promised, still waiting for it...I have access to two Iceland shops in Durham City and Darlington and they are near the bus route.

Actually with my trusty shopping trolley and limited income I have suddenly thought I may be able to find other meals at good prices that I have never thought about before...

On their website I have seen two legs of lamb for £6.

Many years ago we had one on my town and it closed...

I'll also look in Aldi's and the alternative freezer shop in town...Lidl is a bit further away, its as if I have had a lifebulb moment...(with your help)

On the subject of lamb, Aldi is selling lamb at £3.99 a kilo for Easter.

Sadly may not have the spare room this time but it is worth knowing and could help many...but hey, I have pork, chicken, gammon, bacon, ham, duck, salmon, cod,, haddock, mackeral, cod and sole so there's quite a lot to get through:)

So I am lucky(all was reduced I hasten to add)and purchased over many months.

I guess that lamb at Aldi's is coming in at approx £8-£10

  • I've taken a DIY wood saw to meat joint bones before now if the breadknife can't do it.

Or you could carve off a couple of big lumps to freeze without the bone and cook what's left for now - it doesn't matter if part of the bone is exposed.

Or cook it all and freeze the meat, your OH is being a bit silly there.
