Today he went to the job centre to sign off and tyen to organise signing back on once we are bsck. They have told him he aint allowed to go and if he does he will owe a £ 1000 for housing benefit and jsa. Surely that cannot be right?
He's allowed to go if he wants to, but all of his benefit entitlement will stop, including JSA, housing benefit and council tax credit. It's very unlikely that his rent and council tax for one week will be anywhere near £1000.0 -

Go and ask the JobCentre for advice?

You do need to inform the Job Centre that you are going abroad. They will stop any payments as during that time you will not be job seeking but should keep your claim open (depending on how long you are away.)
You need to inform the council (HB) that you are going abroad.
Again, it depends on how long you are going for.
See here for one council's advice:

I have just finished a college course and am about to claim JSA, now I had booked my holiday previous to going to college or claiming JSA and will be returning to University in September, do I really to claim then unclaim and rapid claim!?! Sounds like a load of BS if you ask me
Oh I live in Scotland by the way0 -
this is an odd set up your allowed 2 holiday weeks were you don't have to look for work in the uk, but you cant go abroad?, yet you can claim other benefits over seas?
... were all part of the eu. so could even be looking for work there,
,
You have to be not just seeking but available for work immediately in the UK. Meaning, you have to be able to start work within a few hours of being called.
If you go to look for work in another part of the EU then you aren't available for work immediately in the UK, but reciprocal laws mean that you may be eligible for benefits in the country that you visit. Because of the bureaucracy involved it certainly isn't a good idea to use this for a few weeks of holiday.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

That is correct. If you feel it is 'BS' perhaps you could support yourself over the summer?0 -

Well, will you be away for any of your signing days?
If you miss signing then your claim will be closed automatically, and starting it again will be a lot more trouble than doing a 'rapid reclaim'.
If your holiday does not clash with signing days then you might decide to "forget" to tell them. Doing so would of course be fraud, but if you are discreet then the risk of detection is minimal.0 -

People following stupid 'advice' like this are the reason the JCP has cracked down so much on claimants under 25.0 -
