  • I work bl**dy hard and can not afford a holiday this year due to hours cutting back, increased council tax and utilities prices.

IT MAKES ME FURIOUS TO SEE HOW MUCH SOME OF YOU SPONGERS GET AND MOAN THAT YOU ARE NOT GETTING PAID WHILST ON A JOLLY

JSA = job seekers allowance not costa del sol spending money

I just wish i didn't have to pay council tax, had my rent paid for and basically lived the life of luxury whilst entering competitions on line all day! (check the posts of the people who are receiving every benefit under the sun, all they do is comp!)

    Right rant over.

Back to work - those on this forum look it up in the dictionary :rotfl:

Or just unexpectedly ended up jobless and already had booked their once-in-a-year not-so-cheap 2-week trip to visit family in Christmas?

I havn't come across this problem, since my child was born even when working full time I have not been able to afford a holiday, I am now claiming JSA (or attempting too) and I find it very sad that even if we could afford or apply to charity for help, my child will never have the chance to take a holiday even england :( thats very sad for my child. You should be able to take a break from signing on for 2weeks if you can prove you are still job seeking...we should be up in arms about this.

I was just going to say the same thing. Op it is a long time beween now and august and hopefully you wont have to worry about missing your signing on date. When you do start a job make sure you tell your employer at the start of your employment you have a holiday booked.

I'm always amazed at people assuming they will still be on JSA on 6 months time, whether it is about booking holiday, going to college full-time, or other reasons. Surely anyone totally commited to looking for a job would believe that they are most likely to be in work in a 6 months time period. Surely if you take the attitude that you are not, to the point of already planning what to do in regards to signing in, you are seriously liking in determination and positive attitude that are an essentiel part of gaining employment?
  • You will not be able to claim JSA whilst on holiday abroad. You will have to sign off and then reclaim when you return.

But as others have said, you will probably have a job by then!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • The unemployment situation has changed. Unless you are under 50 and skilled it is hard to get a job. There are plenty of people willing to work for less than the minimum wage. I am over 50 and luckily educated to degree level. I was made redundant in December and have been looking for a job ever since. It is a different working world from the one I was part of for the last 30 or more years. I spoke to the National Careers Service the other day and the adviser I spoke to admitted that it is hard for people in their fifties to get another job, that age discrimination persists and I will have to lower my expectations ... why should I? I will continue to be positive but please do not denigrate the unemployed. Don't fall for the political rhetoric that abounds. The only people that should be blamed and held accountable for the state of our economy and the lack of decent jobs are the banks and the politicians who allowed them to get away with and are still getting away with abusing the system! Furthermore, how about the government doing something about clawing back some of the billions owed in tax by corporations whose head offices reside outside this country. Wake up and smell the coffee!!
  • Hi,

Could anyone tell me the answer to this? I'm claiming job seekers allowance and have found a job, I start august 1st. I've been offered a holiday paid for by a friend in July, it's only 10 days so doesn't clash with my sign on dates, bur I know you're not meant to be abroad and sign on. As I am waiting to start my job I don't feel guilty but wonder do they have a way of flagging peope up that leave the country whilst claiming.

    Not sure what to do

    Thanks

Yes - this happened to me last year - Could he ask that his sign-on date be changed but use an excuse (naughty I know)?
Love all the excuses to take a holiday whilst on "Job Seekers".
I presume you have diplomatic immunity so you are not asked to show your passport...

I took a much needed (free) break to Spain whilst claiming JSA, I simply arranged the flights around my signing on days.
As I said if you can bypass passport control good on you. Otherwise it's a case of Benefit Fraud/Prison. It all gets logged but there is a backlog...
