  • Older post, could not help but notice this as bailey boy is right about this. We can cut to room size service on all carpets ordered just £10 per room at Abbey carpets.

This is all really interesting, we need new carpets for a couple of bedrooms, but it's always hard to know where to go

We are in the process of having our house carpeted and looked at 2 local independents (with all inclusive prices) and Carpet Right. I told all three that we would be supplying the underlay and grippers, and Carpet Right came round to measure yesterday. They were not fussed at all about us providing the underlay etc, in fact, he said it would save him a load of work (calculation wise) although we did make it clear to him that we would want the fitters to lay everything. We saved a load of money too by not opting for their service of removing our old carpet (I think they wanted £2.50 / square metre).

Interestingly, we looked around for the right carpet over the course of 4 weeks. On our initial visit to Carpet Right, they had our carpet on "60% discount" @ £22.99 / square m. 3 weeks later when we went back in, it was "60% off, plus an extra 20% off" @ £22.99 / square meter! So no change there then.

We need 40 square metres of carpet for our house, so bought 3 rolls of Cloud 9 Cumulus (11mm) underlay (45 sq m) and gripper rods from Tradepriced for £172 inc next day delivery.

In the end, we are going for Carpet Right, as they came in cheaper for a 50oz wool carpet, compared to 40oz from the independents, and the independent failed to arrive on the scheduled day to measure up the rooms, so we dropped them for poor service.

I did loads of research about all aspects of this, and in the end this worked out as the best solution for us.

    Lessons learnt :
    1. Ignore any "Discounts" from any shop - compare total price with total price
    2. Sourcing your own underlay and gripper rods can save 75%, and you get the one you really want
    3. Inform the shop from the outset what you will be providing, but let them know that you want them to fit it (time and cost factors in the carpet installation)
    4. Confirm the extra charges for having your own underlay and gripper rods fitted for you (we paid £1 / sq m for underlay and 50p per m for gripper extra, but that was paid in cash to the fitter and still worked out cheaper than buying it from Carpet Right)
    5. 11mm underlay is fine for stairs - if the fitter tells you otherwise, he's not that good (not my words)
    6. 11mm underlay is fine for today's gripper rods. If the carpet comes up - it was not fitted tight enough in the first place (Tradpriced gripper rods good for up to 12mm underlay)
    7. Ignore any pressure to put down deposits etc until you are absolutely happy
    8. Negotiate on price between the companies you have selected for supply and fit

and to add carpet right fitted my stairs. and sometimes the grippers catch your toes. Ouch!!!
  • Carpetright are a complete joke. We saw their advert in the paper for huge savings, MASSIVE discounts but then saw their TOTAL cost = total rip off more like :mad::mad: I also thought the salesman @ Carpetright was really shabby like he couldn't give a toss - this really rattled my beans.

They were particularly more expensive on the Carpet Grippers and Accessories which got me thinking... the carpet might be a decent price, but your making your making the profit on the underlay & accessories... £8.99 per sq.mtr for some shabby waffle underlay and £12.99 for some fairly decent stuff but thats MORE than the carpet!!!!!

The internet saved us £££ and we ended up buying ALL the underlay, grippers and accessories from Wilsons Carpet Underlays .. i'd recommend Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm thick
It worked out about £3.00 per sq.metre incl VAT & Delv for the best underlay.... so compared to £12.99 that carpetright were offering for some average 10mm underlay its just a massive saving!

Thanks to this forum that we saved a pile of money and what we've saved we put towards a holiday in Spain :T

My advice is avoid falling for companies offering discounts, Special Offers, Half Price, offers only last for 1 week etc.. - compare TOTAL prices... and avoid Carpetright completely!
