Carpet Right: 60% off then an additional 20% off and a further 10%

  • I just had a quote for stairs and landing from carpetright on one of their 60% off + 20% off carpets. I needed underlay and all the grippers too. The overall price including delivery and fitting etc was £430. I queried the estimate and found the carpet itself was less than £100 and they were stacking up the price on the extras.

Decided to look around and checked out a small independent firm. Their quote, for a very similar carpet as that from CR, was £240 all-in.

Guess who just carpeted my stairs for me this morning :)

I carpeted 4 (all double) bedrooms, a landing and the stairs last year. Independant manufacturer inc fitting and underlay for 80% wool carpet £900. Allied carpets - £2500 and Carpet Right - £2000.

Allied Carpets and Carpet Right's comment - well you would choose one of the most expensive carpets

When comparing wool carpets from different suppliers you should make sure you are comparing the weight as well as the wool content. If I remember rightly the weight is in ounces.

Yes that is right and I seem to remember the independent one was the heavier (closer weave). Again proving better quality for a much cheaper price. Oh and the underlay was the thicker, heavier kind as well.

Whatever you do never buy your underlay or grippers from the big stores. you can get exactly the same make onlline for 25% of the price. Just google and see.

    B&Q Underlay

    B&Q Pack of 8 Grippers

Compare the prices of the above with Allied, Carpet Right and their mark-up is unbelievable.

Yup, but if you have it fitted they insist on you having their gripper/underlay, you cant supply it yourself

This underlay from B & Q is only 6.1 metres long most rolls are I think 11 metres long. This would have to be taken into account when comparing prices - probably better to get a square metre price.

We used Carpetright last year - similar deal to this. Happy with the carpet - but yes, the price from which they are discounted is ficticious to make it look like a good deal, and they make their money on the underlay and grippers etc. Our underlay ended up costing more than the carpet per sq metre. It is the total price that matters.

Fitting was done by different guys but was very cheap - about £40 for a 13x13 foot room.

Best to check around for prices, though this is difficult with carpet as it is hard to compare like with like exactly. Like DFS, there will always be another Carpetright sale along soon so don't be rushed.
  • When we went to Carpet Right we timed it so that we got free fitting (a limited offer on the range that we picked) on top of the discount. We also kept the existing underlay - it was top notch stuff and in excellent condition - better than the carpet on top of it! Guess if we'd have had to replace the underlay and pay for fitting we might have ended up elsewhere....
