Carpet wrong right enough! When I had my first flat I needed & carpet for my bedroom. I gave the guy the measurements (unfortunately in cms instead of inches) and the fitter turned up with what looked like a rug! I immediately went right out to the shop to take it up with the salesmen (a spiv look-alike) who said that it was entirely my fault and that i'd have to pay for it (plus fitter's time) and order another one. I said, as the expert on carpet measurements, surely he should have seen the obvious mistake especially when I told him it was for a bedroom and not a walk in cupboard..... but he stood his ground. I would never EVER recommend CarpetRight to anyone after that event, 15 years ago!

Sorry, but got to agree with the salesman here. It was your fault, he hasn't got magic vision to see the true size of your room.

  • This underlay from B & Q is only 6.1 metres long most rolls are I think 11 metres long. This would have to be taken into account when comparing prices - probably better to get a square metre price.

B&Q underlay does come in a bag of aprox. 8m² but the comparable m² price on good, better, best product is £3-5 cheaper per m² !!! As an example, B&Q's 3 Star compared to Carpetrights Comfort Master, B&Q is £3 cheaper per square metre! Also, each gripper stick is 59p (comes in a pack of 8) at B&Q compared to £2.19 at Carpetright!!!!

Finaly, Carpetright hi-lo their prices so halt of their stock is really expensive while they establish their price int he marketplace whilst the other half is on offer. Then they switch them over to establish pricing again so they can repeat the stunt again later. How can people be so naive as to think they're actually getting all these discounts? Was the carpet they've bought really worth the £60 in the first place or is it indeed worth the £6.99 they've now paid?
Outrageous that companies can get away with it nowadays...
  • Words fail me as to why people still shop in 'Multiple' flooring shops......I have so many stories...99 times out of 100, you can get equal, if not better products from your local, independent retailer.

50% OFF? Shouldn't think so. It works like this: If a retailer sells a product at twice its price at a certain amount of its outlets for a specific period of time, they can then sell it everywhere else at 'half-price' (Even though it isn't). So a product regularly sold at £10 can then legally be promoted as "Was £20, now £10" This, in my eyes, is deceiving the honest public!

"I CAN ONLY OFFER YOU THE REDUCED PRICE IF YOU PAY A DEPOSIT TODAY"
Rubbish! A lame tactic to make sure the saleman hits his commission target. even if you go back next week, you will probably get the same price.

FREE UNDERLAY & FITTING? Forget it! If anything is offered 'free' then it is usually built into the price of something else i.e the carpet itself. If you are receiving a freebie from the retailer, ask for an itemised breakdown of your bill and see if your budget bedroom carpet is suddenly £50 a metre!!

"BUY THE SAME AMOUNT OF UNDERLAY AS CARPET FOR FREE FITTING???"
In most cases, this is a blatant ripp-off! An example:

    Your room is 6mx3m. Since most carpet are 4m wide, you will require 6mx4m of carpet, leaving some waste of 1mx6m;

In order to get free fitting, you will need to also buy 6mx4m of underlay. In other words, in order to get free fitting, you must buy too much underlay for your requirements. The fitters will almost certainly take this away to resell...

THE FITTERS: Be aware, most multiple retailers' fitters are contracted out, and not employed by them, therefore if they make a mistake, the retailer will not be held responsible. You will have to chase the fitter yourself for refund or replacement!
Fitters for some multiple retailers have to pay quite a hefty a weekly fee, just to be kept on their books! In the fitters eyes, its a bit of a guarantee they will get work, but a bit cheeky on the retailers side...

    UNDERLAY £9.99m2? GRIPPER £2 A STICK? DOOR METALS £5.99?
I am unsure of individual companies' prices, but I do know that if you buy these from an internet underlay shop, such as www.carpet-underlay-shop.co.uk and www.tradepriced.com you will definitely save ££££££££'s.

    FREE MEASURING?
No. Its a free estimate. If you ask for the measurements, they will refuse.

    DEPOSIT REQUIRED BEFORE THEY MEASURE?
No chance. What if its too expensive? What if you change your mind? Your deposit will be trousered!

    PRODUCT NAME CHANGING
The multiple retailers purposefully change the names and colour-codes of their carpet and underlay ranges, which makes it near impossible for you to shop around for the identical goods elsewhere.

There are many other tactics the multiples use to get a sale from you, I could go on all day...

    MY ADVICE?
I would give the trade to your local carpet shop! They will have a more universal choice of floorings and you are likely to deal directly with the owner, (rather than a snotty schoolkid with a 1 day sales training course under his belt), which means you can have a good BARTER!! Also, chances are that their fitters are personally known to them, and well established!

(Be aware, my points don't necessarilly relate to CarpetRight!)

...But hurry: Offers end every Monday.

In my opinion you are correct...A clued-up flooring salesman would have asked what format your measurements were in, rather than make a LAZY assumption they are in inches! After all, they are meant to be the experts and offer guidance!

When I worked in flooring retail, I was forever being told the room was "5 by 4" It is then up to me, as a saleman, to identify how you have measured your room. If you are not sure, I would then advise you to remeasure, or we would come out and do it for you!

  • Carpetright do not directly employ fitters, so the poster who had to give the fitters an extra £20 because they were only fitting carpet and not new underlay was done over.
I have just had to give carpetright three times as much for a particular vinyl than I found it for on ebay, because the guy didn't have a big enough roll left. But I had fallen in love with it, so what you gonna do?

I would never use Carpet Right again, we moved into our current house 9 years ago when I was 6 months pregnant with twins, the day we moved in, the floors were all bare we had a quote to move all the furniture for £20.00 to lay the carpets, they came 5 days later to fit the carpet ( 3 hours late) and said there was too much furniture and would charge £100.00, the person who gave me the quote came out from the shop which was only a mile away and accused us of moving more furniture in even though everything was already in the house when he came and there were boxes everywhere and there was actually less as roller blinds, curtains and boxes were emptied into cupboards etc, had to pay £100.00 so that I could have the carpets fitted that day as I had a 2 year old who do not like the bare floors and I knew I would have to have the twins early due to problems, so paid, would never use them again.

Oh dear. Next time this happens, let me know the full range name/pattern number etc etc, and I can supply the industry-wide details of the product, which will be recognised by your local independent carpet shop!

  • Where you buy your carpet from is down to personal choice.

It's true that CarpetRight artificially increase their prices for 28 consecutive days (the legal requirement) and then discount them down again. I've seen carpets in CarpetRight not during a sale at £ 85.00 per square metre when the average High Street price was nearer £ 15.00 per square metre for the same carpet. Believe me you just don't make 60, 70 or 80% selling carpets!

If your're buying a well known brand of carpet then it's easy to compare prices between retailers but companies are wising up to this a changing the labels / names. John Lewis sell some really nice carpets, with John lewis labels and fancy names but they're simply re-branded carpets by Cormar, Brintons and Victoria Carpets.

Another trick is to advertise a low price per square metre but then charge the customer for more carpet than is supplied. This isn't so easy to do in a lounge or bedroom but when your'e having a few areas fitted or a hall, stairs landing, the extra quantity is easily disguised. Ask to see the 'cutting plan' or ask for a breakdown of quantity for each area. I regularly see customers who have been told that they require an extra 10 or 20m2 to the amount actually required. Remember it doesn't matter who cheap the m2 price is for the carpet, underlay, fitting etc - it's the final figure that matters.

Where ever you choose to by your carpet from (online, local retailer etc) it's important that you use a suitably qualified fitter. One of the problems with CarpetRight is that they use sub-contract fitters with little experience. If you use a local retailer ask how long the fitter has been with the company and whether they're employed or sub-contract. If you're buying online check out https://www.nicfltd.org.uk This is the website for the National Institute of Carpet Fitters and anyone listed has to meet and maintain a certain standard.

Finally wherever possible, pay for your new carpet on a credit card (even if you have the cash). You are far better protected (Consumer Credit Act) when paying on a credit card than you are when using debit card, cash or cheque.

    Good look and happy shopping.
