Broken into whilst asleep upstairs.

Hi, i just wanted to come on and get any extra advise. On friday night at 3.20am i was broken into.I was asleep upstairs in my house and alone as i live alone. I just heard the door banging really loudly so i grabbed my mobile and locked myself in the toilet upstairs. I have never been so scared in my entire life. I was shaking uncontrollably and i could hear them downstairs. I dialled 999 and askd for the police. What really shocked me was when i asked in urgency 'when will they get here, i am on my own and they are downstairs' i was told ' well its kicking out time now but someone will be there as soon as they can!'I am shocked by this and feel so shaken up.They took my car keys, my car, bag, laptop and some other bits and drove away in my car.The police arrived and took a full statement but they were not compassionate. I just feel like they have not taken it seriously and things could have been so much worse.I have cancelled all my cards, my insurance company were great, they had someone over within the hour as my front door was not even able to be shut. I need a new door frame but have been told that the insurance will be in touch in the next 2 days.I have also contacted the car insurance and they were ok. The car has been found but it is not driveable. The police officer dealing with the case called me last night when he came on duty. I had already heard from the vehile recovery that the car had been found, he told me that i could go and look at the car but not touch anything as forensics would need to take prints etc.I called the vehicle recovery this morning and got a rude woman on the phone telling me that i could not see the car and also said ' well we cant even get into it as its locked' . She asked if i had a spare key. I dont understand why someone could not have told me that yesterday as i have left the spare key at my parents which is whre i stayed last night as i dont feel safe to stay here at all.So i now have to take the spare key to them. The other thing was that my mobile phone was taken. I cancelled it today first thing as the police did not leave me with a crime ref no which was needed by the phone company. They told me that some calls had been made from this number yesterday so i took all the details, the numbers, times of the calls and how long they lasted for. I called the police to advise them and they told me that they would get the officer dealing with the case to call me back on thursday! She didnt even want the information. I feel frustrated that they just dont seem interested and its awful, shocking and disturbing enough without them being so unhelpful. Is this normal? Is there anything else i need to do?My work have been fantastic, really sympathetic and gave me today off and also got me a hire car as i am a rep but opted out of company car scheme despite this they sorted a car out for me.I now have to move in with my aunt which is really good of her but i just feel so inconvnienced and causing inconvenience because of these scum! The car was actually found in the same area where i live and i am so worried that they could come back at any time. The excess for the car is 600 pounds (pound sign wont work on this computer!) So i am dreading that! Its so unfair and unjust that i have to pay all this for something completely out of my control.Sorry if this is a little jumbled.I now will have to put my house up for sale or rent it out as i just feel so jumpy and unsafe here.Today, my mum and dad took the day off work as they didnt want me to see the car on my own.Victim support have called and they were great.Any advise appreciated.:(

You poor thing. !!!!{hugs}}}
I don't really have any advise - except maybe put in a formal complaint regarding the attitude of the Police as soon as you are settled and sorted.
I'm sure someone will be along to advise how to do that
It sounds like you have a great support network around so take some comfort in that.
take care of yourself hon and do take any help offered by Victim Support - they're great

Just want to say how sorry I am to hear about your terrible experience.
Unfortunately, the police do not seem interested in crimes like this any more. Whether it is because they have little chance or catching the culprits or whether it is because if they do catch them they are either not taken to court of they are given suspended sentences.
How long did the police take to respond?
My husband was in the police (around the time of Life on Mars!!) and if they got a "thieves on" call all the local mobiles would race round. This does not happen any more.
We have had a number of break-ins over the years and nowadays the police sometimes do not come out until the following day!!!
Once again, I am really sorry about what has happened and I know your confidence will be dented for some time but overtime the feelings will diminish. They have stolen your property don't let them steal your life.0 -

Hi Angel, I'm really sorry about what you have been through, so a big hug to you 1st of all.If you feel the police are fobbing you off and not taking it very seriously then i would ring them or go to the station and ask to speak to the senior officer on duty which will probably be an inspector or sergeant.Don't let them make you feel worse, its not your fault and its the police's job to catch who did this, so if you rang the and had key phone numbers that were called on your stolen mobile and they did'nt want to know then they need a kick in the goolies/foof.Make sure you give the numbers called to the senior officer and tell him/her that you have already rang to tell someone but was fobbed off as if it was unimportant.Hope you feel better soon and the police catch the scummy basts who did it.Stephxxxxxx
Sorry my thanks button, smileys and seemingly my space and return button wont work properlyRecently moved to South Wales

Just to say, hugs and be kind to yourself.
You have had a huge shock and a very frightening experience. Do what you have to do to get by. Personally, I would start with a good cry and an industrial size stash of chocolate.
Come on this board for support whenever you need to - there are some lovely people on here.
I wish I could help more.Thinking of you and praying for you.Always another chapter0 -
My thoughts are with you- the same thing happened to a friend of mine a few years ago, she went back to stay with her parents for a while, but then started karate lessons- last tim eI saw her she'd got her black belt. I suggest you do something similar to put your mind at rest.
There's not much I can add about the police, perhaps they see so much of it, it is old hat to them, whereas it is the first time this has happened to you.Best wishes to you, hope whoever it is does get caught. A bloke at work was amazed by the swift response to his cars being broken into, but it turned out they'd done the whole street that night, so the chances of catching them were higher?

My advice to anyone who gets broken into when they're at home, phone the police & tell them they've got guns, you'll have half the local force on your doorstep in minutes.Winnings
