Hi, just bought some of the 12l white basic paint and its great this time, got a whole bungalow to do, (walls ceilings etc) and using this as a base coat first, much thicker than any other brand so far and only £12 too,
going back for some more soon, very bright as well.

I think B&Q paint is great, I'm not just saying that because I work there!
I agree that the value stuff sucks, although it is ok to use as a seal for new plaster. They also do 'Everywhere' paint that has teflon in it to make it super durable, (although I am conducting my own experiment at work with it at the mo, so I'll let you know) It comes in a good range of colours and comes in satin or matt. Their colours collection paint, in black tins is rather nice too, (more colours coming soon!) It has a high opacity and has a nice chalky appearance.0 -

Has anyone used this paint before, and is it any good? And I was also wondering which finish to get....is the matt one equally scrubbable as the satin?
And how did your experiment go, Starkitten?0 -
ok all. just finishing loft conversion, plasterer here this week. can someone please recommend a white emulsion for me , far too many brands and options on the go for a novice. cheers0

Budget Gloss & undercoat is fine, but be careful of "Cheap" emulsion, always look on the can, if it says "Stir well before use" DONT buy it, itll be too sloppy. This ONLY applies to Emulsion !
The professional painter and decorator who painted my hallway, lounge and dining room swears by Leyland paint that you can buy from any proper painting and decorating shop.
In terms of sloppy paint ... he always waters down his paint anyway "as there's no point dragging thick paint across the wall with the roller". This is the words of a professional decorator who has recently done some work for a prominent MP.

I just painted our bedroom in Dulux Heritage paint - Pure White and Bathstone Beige - £10 for 5 litres - we have a surplus DIY shop near us. 2 coats was needed.
Can't recommend the paint highly enough. If you are changing colour or going over new plaster I suggest using a cheap but decent white paint first as a base coat. This is cheaper than coloured so your top coats of colour will look better.
B&Q White gloss and satinwood is excellent. Crown, Dulux and especially Leyland have yellowed - B &Q doesn't!!
I would also avoid one coat paints as they tend to not cover in one coat and be too thick and difficult to use.
Remember to prepare the room thoroughly - this is boring and probably more time consuming than painting but really worth it for the finish you get. I have learnt through experience!!0 -
I would always recommend going to a Trade supplies and asking for Johnstone's / Layland.
Own brand paint tends to not be cost effective and Dulux and Crown just ride along on their household names.Bet match total as of 04/10 = God Knows + About £1000 Quidco. Time for Mrs Huddsta to have a crack!!!

I used B and Q paint about 18 months ago. One was magnolia and the other was lilac. It looked wonderful to start with.Used on different surfaces in different rooms. The paint has actually starting flaking. It drives us crazy. I would never buy it again. Even over the wll papered walls it has flaked. Never seen that before. Would love to know the reason why this happened. Thinking of trying to scrape the flakes off and go over it all with Dulux or crown. When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile0

Hi, we have just used B&Q colour collections paint in our bedroom - it is lovely, and the choice of colours is really good - we couldnt find a similar shade initially when we were looking at dulux etc. However, i have to say it is the only paint that i have had a reaction to whilst using- i got itchy rashes where the paint had speckled onto my hand off the roller - and i dont have particularly sensitive skin. On the plus side it meant my husband had to do the second coat!0
