We used Wickes Sunshine Yellow & Barley White, there aren't many colour choices, 'trade' silk vinyl, 10 & 15ltr tubs, covered pretty well, considering lightish shades & still looks good, 18months on. Saying that, it wasn't as good at covering, as the 2.5lt colours from Focus, but acceptable.

I have used Wickes .. B & Q and Dulux, B&Q's own was by far the best of the three.

Dont go for the super cheap b & q though. I had magnolia and it took 4 coats (yes 4) to do a decent job. Wished id have bought the better b & q or dulux now!

B&Q own brand paints used to get excellent reviews in Which? Surprisingly, Dulux paints seldom did. I would suggest that anyione who is undertaking a lot of painting consults with the latest Which? report on paints. They do all sorts of tests from ease of application to coverability. You can often read the Which? report at your local library.

Basically, you want good coverability from a paint, otherwise you have to apply several coats. It doesn't always follow that the cheapest paint has the poorest coverability. Dulux is normally the most expensive paint on offer, but in my experience, it's nowt special and I think a tad overrated.

  • We buy the big 15l tubs of emulsion and I stick to crown now after trying other brands including B&Q over the years.I found the B&Q trade paint didn,t cover as well, although it is the best of the cheaper brands, and I had to put on 2 coats whereas with crown I only had to use one.I would definately say that the crown is actually better value for money because it is better quality, goes on easier and covers better.

I use Farrow and Ball paint the National Trust colours. Their colours are best used in old houses . For a very soft chalky look try Estate Emulsion which leaves a lovely wipeable finish. I use these colours on a base coat of white followed by two top coats. This gives a lovely depth of colour. I have an old house and this paint won't suit new interiors. You can buy this paint now in Homebase. It's more expensive but worth every penny. Sudbury Yellow is one of my favourites. I have used the colours all over my house and have not been disappointed.
