I have to admit to being a hoarder but in my defence I have known extremely bad times when there has been nothing in the cupboards and my purse was empty.I swore then that it wouldnt happen again and thankfully it hasnt.I dont particularly hoard one item it tends to be a general cross-section.I have a pantry, kitchen cupboards and two freezers filled to capacity. But I do use the items and then restock so its a constantly replenishing stock.I have been trying to be a good girl since Xmas and have freecycled and ebayed loads of our spare stuff so the main part of the house is now reasonably clear. But I cant bear to be ruthless with the kids toys as I grew up with very few toys and I wouldnt want that for my kids.Deep down I think my fellow hoarders and I have a deep seated reason for the hoarding and our stashes are like a comfort blanket for us

You're absolutely right about the kids' toys: my mother, who's always (as long as I can remember anyway) had an unhealthy obsession with throwing things out, binned my favourite toys when she decided I'd outgrown them and/ or that they were too tatty to keep. I overcompensated, and I think that's the main reason I ended up a compulsive hoarder.
I have to admit I was glad I'd hoarded food and other essential household supplies a while ago when HMRC screwed up our tax credit claim and didn't give us any money for months, so it was really useful to have stockpiles of stuff that had previously been on special offer. I learned a bit of culinary creativity too, producing (more or less) edible meals from whatever happened to be left in the cupboard/ freezer.
  • I know that in true OS, I shouldn't hoard anything, but just buy it as I need it.

My vice is toilet paper - I know that I'll never run out. But in true OS, I always buy it when it's on offer and never pay full price for it. I've got 5 x 9-roll packs under the stairs.....

Is there anything that you know that you will never run out of because you buy in "bulk"? :D

Get some new full-price (not cheapo or free-offer ones) energy saving bulbs ;) They've improved so much recently, and are now almost indistinguishable in their output from incandescent bulbs :D

I've posted a link on here. I had the same problem. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1234777
  • We've had to start a second hoard for our low energy bulbs. We had a 'normal' sized store but now every time we apply for something related to Dh's disability we seem to be entitled to a pack of low energy bulbs. I'm sure there's another two packs on order still !
Eldest DS keeps talking about moving out so we can kit him out with energy saving bulbs when he finally leaves!

I am terrible for buying things on offer and hording them away.
Trouble is I don't stock take like some people and just assume we have loads still ..... and suddenly there's NO toothpaste !!
I do keep an eye on the loo roll and ST stocks though couldn't bear to run short of those !

You're as bad as me, I hate to run out of loo roll. We've recently moved house and one of the things that got me horribly over-excited was the fact that we've now got enough space in the bathroom to store a WHOLE 12 pack of loo roll - in fact there's room for two or three! Yes, I am easily pleased lol :)
