I have just tried to get a quote from Directline for our two cars and was told you only get the discount if you have a bank account with them! :huh:0

could be a good place to start, if you want to try and argue the toss.
Is this a write-off argument?
Is the insurance on the car fully comp. or third party ?
Harry
Thanks for this harry, No, not a right off argument, more than i want to get the lowest possible renewal quote. Looking at the info i got from the website, seems like I over estimated its cost by £500, i will contact the renewal insurance company tomorrow, might shave off a few quid!!Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!0 -
Although I'm the named driver on my wife's policy, she relies on me to arrange her car insurance. More Than has the gimmick of no claims discount for the life of the policy which is, I appreciate, rather difficult to quantify. This facility is now offered by Norwich Union but, as usual, I did the usual comprehensive trawl. We drive a '52' Seat Ibiza and the comprehensive quote, including breakdown and recovery and legal protection, was £309 from More Than. I rang them and stated Norwich Union could offer a similar deal for £220 whereupon they offered a "£50 discount". I have now paid £250 to renew with More Than which is acceptable for a comprehensive policy with the breakdown and recovery included. I rather suspect that, since the Norwich Union quote included just £39 for this cover, it was just a one year carrot0

very interesting to hear we are taking martins advice to shop around for insurance my quote from HASTINGS DIRECT jumped from 313 to 411 fully comp, protected NCB and my partner as a named driver to i shopped and shopped till i droped and guess what M&S gave me the best quote 311 all in plus windowscreen cover free, relay/loss of keys to car and house and my excess is 300 what a beauty not forgetting what martin had said to check and check again as the prices do go down well he was right it stated from 382 and some how came down to 311 in 3 days how weird....thanks martin oh just wondering, is it true if you dont insure a car for 2 years you loss all your NCB as my partner has just been told, hes been abroad for a year and when he came back went into a keep fit mode and wasnt told of this, any one out their who could shed a light on this matter thanks0

It is time to renew my car insurance, now myself and my girlfriend often drive eachothers cars so I thought this renewal I will enquire as to adding her to my policy, thinking it will probably only add about 50 quid or so its well worth it to have her fully comp. as opposed to the 3rd party cover she has now when driving my car.
here is the shocker folks, it works out cheaper every time to add her to the policy! WHY? damned if I know but it does, every company I have had a quote with has come back about 20% less when I add her to the policy! it really does not make any sense whatsoever.:: No Unapproved or advertising links in signatures please - FM ::0 -

Because your girlfriend is classed as a lower risk than you. E.g. she is female, which is usually classed as lower risk than males, especially if you are relatively young. There will be other factors too though.
So whenever she is drving your car there is less risk for your insurers than when you are driving it, which brings the premium down. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
I am just shocked it has knocked so much off, she is 35 and I 32 so not much difference there but either way, she will be going on my insurance and its something i will recomend to others to lower there premiums.:: No Unapproved or advertising links in signatures please - FM ::0

For the first time in my life, I have to get car insurance in my own name, and I am well outside my comfort zone. I am a poorly paid (just under £900 a month) school computer technician and simply cannot afford to make any mistakes.
I passed my test in 1976, but have always been the named driver on my wife's policy (she used to work for an insurance company), so don't now have any NCD in my own name. I have contacted our old insurance company, but they couldn't or wouldn't offer me anything for my 30 years of safe driving (I've had a couple of incidents, but i was always the target, not the culprit, and none recently) - one more reason for not wanting to use them anyway.
Also, my trusty (touch wood) Mondeo is 10 years old and, according to Parkers, only worth £750 at best.
The more I try to find answers, the more questions I end up with. However, it does look like I will have to just get the minimum of cover for the cheapest premium possible, until I build up my own NCD.
So, TP, TPF&T or comprehensive? In view of the value of the car, what level of voluntary excess? The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
