Cut Your Car Insurance In 4 Steps Discussion Area

I have a 56 reg BMW 318 Convertible. Have been insured with BMW Insurance for last 5 years (with previous cars). My quote for insurance that commences this weekend was £359 fully comprehensive with a £450 excess, inclusive of NCD protection and uninsured loss recovery etc. I went to Moneysupermarket last night and ended up at Esure this morning. Same cover has been secured for a price of £234. As a footnote I checked with BMW Insurance prior to signing up with Esure; their revised offer was for £318.
Very pleased with this saving of £115 from original quote and I will never again blindly sign up for this insurance without checking.0 -
Martin is quite right when he says that adding a driver to your car insurance CAN reduce it in some instances.
I'm a 28 yr old driver, been driving 4 years. I recently rang Norwich Union about my renewal quote which last year was £417, and it's been cut to £349.99 by adding my partner as a named driver!
I only found this out because the guy I spoke to was absolutely wonderful and openly told me that adding someone reduces your quote, to try and bring the price down for me. He said that the company obviously don't advertise this because they would really lose out if they did, but that since he found out, he tells everyone to do it!
Hope this helps people. It's definitely worth asking at least!0 -
I have just received my renewal quote from Direct Line for car insurance, who i have been with for years.
When I went into their website and put my details in, the quote has come up £60 less!! I have phoned them about this and they have told me to let my current policy lapse and take out a new one myself on line as they cannot match it. Also I need to send in my renewal quote to them to prove no-claims discount!
Seems a very strange way of doing it - and long winded - but well worth it for £60 saved! Has anyone else experienced this?0 -

No that's right most companies do it. They are looking for the NEW customers hoping the current ones won't check. Prudential does the same, and I took a new policy last year rather than the renewal one and saved loads. This seems unfair but most will let you take the new policy for a cheaper fare.0 -
Daughters had her renewal from Churchill its not even down by 10% shouldnt they go down by 10% its her 2nd year no claims? its £24 cheaper than last year. Shes rang them and they wont go any lower, shes done another quote with them online which turns out at about the same given that she then has to add business to it as shes a student nurse. The only difference is the excess on hers is 175 and the internet quote is 100. They did say they would honour that and add business to it which brings it to exactly the same as the renewal cost but I guess that she will be considered a new customer and have to pay a higher first payment, she will have to check that.
Not sure if she can start afresh with them altogether and get cashback from quidco but the problem is a lot of them dont seem to do business cover online as an option.
She did a lloyds quote but they too dontt give option for business but the quote is about the same as churchills renewal only without business. Just have to decide if its worth the hassle of starting a new policy and risking getting the cashback to track. Could she then add business once the cashback has gone through? Do they charge to make changes?
What is lloyds like as an insurer though is it worth moving?Thanx

Out of curiosity we put a ficticious name into a quote for churchill a few doors down from us, no phone number just same age same car same details all exactly the same and the quote comes out £69 cheaper. They told her if she got a cheaper online quote with them to ring them with it and they would theen match it but it seems so unfair that in her own name it comes out more, shes been with them 2 years now this will be a third if she goes through with them. Do you think we should tell them about whats happened or could we get into trouble for creating the ficticious account? Why do you think it turns out that much cheaper in someones elses name but exactly same details?Thanx

Whats the best way to do this through quidco? I mean is it best to get a quote from the pru site beforehand then log into quidco go to the pru offer and log in to retrieve the quote and get it that way instead of faffing about in quidco before getting the offer?
Do they track pretty quick as I'm thinking if it looks like its not going to, to cancel it as the car insurance isnt due till another couple of weeks
Does anyone know if they charge to change anything afterwards as my daughter really needed business cover but they don't give that option online
I presume you can still pay by monthly and still use this offer?Thanx

Hi - this is not really a reply to any thread - I have just phoned my car insurer - MoreThan - to change my addresss and they wanted a £10 admin fee to do just that!! I couldn't believe it and told them I would rather change my insurer than give them £10 for a few clicks on the computer. After a bit of "discussion" and as I wanted to take out an extension for foreign cover, they said the admin fee would be waived. I will be casting around for a new insurer when renewal time comes around methinks!! What a rip off - or do all the companies charge this "admin fee"??:mad:0

if i was you i would ensure you get all your quotes via quidco - this ensures that all cookies will track (or should do) via quidco.
also try getting a quote from liverpool victoria as they seemed to have changed their house and car insurance risk calculations as they have been much better for some of my family members - but they dont give cb on quidco:(.
for business cover - depending on what level she needs - shop around some give basic level 1 for free ( i think esure and directline give this for free but best to check). If its pru ring them up and check how much it is to add it on after setting up from quidco.
all the best.0
