I have found the same result as threewheeer. My renewal was £281. Going onto insure supermarket site it brought up the Post Office as being one of the cheapest, but what really cut it is that they would give the £50 back within 14 to 21 days. This reduces my insurance by £99 as it is in effect £182. Highly recommended, but I don't know how long this lasts for.

  • ;) I am new 2 this !!! so please bear with me - I am finding this very confusing - as there are many instructions.... let me know if I am in the wrong place to say this but has anyone tried the Post Office for car insurance? I have and saved quite a lot. Also getting £50 cashback in the form of postal orders which can be cashed in at any post office - try an online quote 2 C if they R ok 4 U . Please don't keep renewing with your present insurer, unless, of course if they are cheaper than everyone else - they rely on people being lazy and are coining it in -cheers suziequeue:D
  • Hi guys

Insurance cost are different for everyone depending on age, postcode, usage, license condition, claims, car type etc.... so its very difficult to benchmark cheap insurers as what is cheap for someone else is expensive for another. I have spoken to quite a few insurers in the past and different insurance companies offer diffrerent types of cover so you need to be sure that your are getting the same deal when comparing (unless you are just looking for insurance for legal purposes).

Also most insurance companies (as with most companies now) seem more focused on gaining new customer/business rather than retaining exisiting ones, so it is always best to shop around every year for quotes as the like of Tesco normally give a great quote first time round to establish your business and then when renewal comes round they are not so competitive although as I said earlier shop around as they might still be your best bet.

It is also worth considering asking for discount if you are using the same company for home and contents aswell as they may be more inclined to give you a deal if you threaten to to take you other policies away with you.

You must also watch to for cheaper quotes as some are only cheap becasue they only last for 10 month instead of 12 month so make sure you check this prior to acceptance.

At the end of the day it is annoying, but it is always best to shop around at each renewal time and make sure you leave plenty of time to avoid being uninsured and dont get complacent as you can bet the insurers wont.

    Cheers

    Paul

My daughters renewal is due on 6th Sept. She will get quotes from other insurers plus get an online one from her own to compare (churchill) but if she finds its cheaper to swap is it easy? I'm thinking of the no claims thing would she need anything from her old insurer to prove to the new one that she has the 1 year no claims? And could anything go wrong with this?
    Thanx

I have M&S insurance at the moment.. My renewal as gone up by £58.
I can only think its gone up that amount because I booked it up "on line" last year.
I currently have NCD protection, with one claim being made for a chip in the car windscreen for October 2005. Apparently I'm allowed two claims per 3 years.
When doing other web searches, do I have to declare this as a claim having been made. ? I seem on my searches to be penalised for making such a small claim. I wish I hadnt bothered claiming such a small amount. I had it in my mind this would not affect future policies.

It's very easy to swap insurance at renewal time. Your new insurer may want proof of your no claims discount and all you have to do is send them your renewal notice which states any NCD that you have. Sometimes the insurer doesn't ask for it as was the case with my son last year.

Just be sure that your current insurer doesn't operate an automatic renewal "for your convenience".

Windscreen repairs do not normally count as making a claim so as far as I'm aware you do not have to declare this.

Her insurance is Churchill and it is automatic renewal but she would just ring up to cancel it wouldnt she.

She may stay with Churchill now as the renewal has come and its not too bad compared to new quotes. Only thing is she has now decided she wants to add her boyfriend to the policy so he can drive when she gets tired on long journeys. Last time she changed something they charged her £25 for doing so, she just changed to business travel rather than social and domestic as that only covered her for one place of work and shes a student nurse and has placements at different hospitals. Will they charge for adding her boyfriend as its renewal time?

Is there anything to be aware of too by adding him to her policy? shes 22 and hes 25 what would happen if there was any kind of accident while he was driving?
    Thanx

Yes she would. I was just pointing out that some insurers do automatic renewal and it has caught a few people out.

They won't charge for adding him as such but her renewal quote will probably alter. It may be more or less depending on how they view him risk wise.

As I said it may increase the cost of the policy. If there was an accident whilst he was driving it would be dealt with as a claim in the same way as if she was driving. It would also affect her NCD.
