I followed the 4 steps to the letter and have ended up reducing my renewal quote from £199 to £150 with a £50 cash back from the Post Office AND they include a few extra things for free. In other words I've HALVED my costs. Wow. Am I happy?!!:rotfl:

I did a search on the Moneysupermarket website for our car insurance renewal and it came up with Sainsbury's, a saving of some £50. When I went to purchase the insurance I discovered that it was underwritten by my present insurers, esure. Went back to esure and told them what the situation was and they agreed to match the quote from Sainsburys! Thanks for the tip about going back to your present insurers before switching. I have now also saved my NCD protection at 73% instead of 50% which is what it would have gone down to had I switched to Sainsbury's. This is a point worth checking before you switch insurers.

Really getting into this money saving lark!!!

After receiving £78 refunded from my credit card company (re: overcharging on late payment fees - and that's just their first offer - I'm going for the lot!), I decided to check my car insurance - I'd literally just renewed with Tesco.

I managed to find a cheaper quote (by screenscraping) with Sainsbury's, cheaper by about £13, but with much better excesses/benefits - so I phoned Tesco and told them. As I was still in a 14 day cooling off period, they passed me straight to the 'Customer Retention' department (the first time I've ever heard anyone admit that these retention departments exist).

After listening to the details of the Sainsbury's quote, Tesco's said they didn't price match and they couldn't match any of the benefits. I was just about to accept a full refund from them and I asked again if they couldn't improve on the price - the girl was hesitant and they she said 'wait a minute - let me look at this again' - and then she offered to beat the Sainsbury's quote by £18.66, and their original quote by £31.50!

    To recap:

    I'd paid for Tesco's Value insurance £329.70
    Found Sainsbury's Quote £316.86
Told Tesco and they requoted me £298.20

It really works!!!! And then on the Tesco website I found I was eligible for the current promotion of £25 free fuel vouchers if I bought/renewed my car insurance policy - which in theory takes my car insurance down from £329.70 to £273.20 - a saving of £56.50 - which took me less than an hour...

Thank you, Martin - soooooooooo much!!!

I can strongly recommend the 4 Step Plan for cheaper car insurance :j :T :j

    Hi Guys

Just thought I would share a tip with if you do not already know, apologies if you do.

When using confused.com for your car insurance pricing when you view the list of insurers and their rates do not click on the link from confused goto the cheapest company's website direct and enter the same details thus saving a further £20-30.

I am 31 and drive a VW Golf 2003 V6 4MOTION and the insurance is pretty steep but I use confused as a bench marking system as they will show me the cheapest insurers and then I go direct as last time the difference on my confused quote and my Norwich union quote was £28

    Cheers

I have always insured my car through the same broker, but this year they quoted £407 for my 6-year old Escort - so I used Martin's 4-step plan and found a cheaper quote for £277 (TIP: I could have done it for £271 but it didn't include all I wanted so check what the policy offers and the cost of add-ons like Legal Expenses & Breakdown, before you buy).

I rang my broker and told them, and after asking me to hold (no more than 30 seconds) told me they could offer me renewal for £240 INCLUDING LEGAL EXPENSES COVER (normally £20). I asked why I hadn't been offered this to begin with and she claimed it was a 'new product' which had just come on line for 'special situations' like mine (???). PIFFLE!!

Now for the killer punch....she asked me if I wanted to add on Breakdown cover for £65 - but I was ready for her, and cooly informed her I'd been quoted cover with europ assistance for £59 (http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/) -surprise surprise, she offers to do the whole lot for me (insurance, legal expenses & breakdown) for £285, so effectively my breakdown cover is only £45!!

    RESULT!

    Thanks Martin!! :money:

Don't know if it's already been posted (have read the whole thread).

Last year my wife had a renewal quote from the RAC for about £260.

I went to their website to get a fresh quote and put in the same details that were on the renewal quote. The web quote came up at approx £180.

I phoned the RAC and questioned the difference and after comparing both quotes they confirmed that the data was the same and couldn't explain the difference (apart from a small percentage for a web discount). They gave me the insurance at the web based price.

This year I have done the same comparison with my policy and this has come out at about £50 cheaper.

It pays to get a web quote from you current insurer.

    Hi,
Worth mentioning that the Post Office is offering £50 Postal order to any new insurance, I have just renewed with them, quote was £186.36 insured through Zurich, my own same criteria quote direct with Zurich was £154.
With £50 back I still saved with Post office, worth checking their prices.
    Regards to All
