  • Thanks to all for this Thread - and for the pics, and links, and inspiration.

I am one of those people who know what they like when they see it - but struggle putting the look together in my own home, and this is really inspiring me to have faith and start on my house!.

Haribo - Your house is lovely... :T

Has anyone got any ideas for a 'shabby chic' study?? - currently a wall of wood shelves (which I might paint after the tips on here), and a computer desk - how can I make it look more classy, and nice?

Haribo - what colour paint is your blackboard frame? I love it.

Thank you all - Hope you are having a great day!
  • Charley... Thanks for your comments. The house was built in 1930 and the frontage is quite Art Deco with bay windows in every room.I prefer the Art Nouveau style though which started about 1890. The fire place in the bedroom is Art Nouveau but we reckon that's the one that was in there. When we moved in the fireplace was boarded up and we found that fireplace rusting under the garden shed. The bathroom is currently without a ceiling as OH is installing new spotlights.

Honeypie... The paint is mellow green by Crown.

As far as the study goes, I did have one until a couple of months ago when Dtwin2 claimed the room. I should have taken photos. Basically I had a big pine table and lots of shelves. Then I bought tonnes of pretty boxes from Au Natural to store everything in. None of them matched but it looked really pretty.
  • Thanks Haribo,

Oh I wish you had a picture of your study!. I have got lots of books on the shelves at the moment - and it looks messy - in fact - this thread has made me feel like everything is my house either looks messy or boring :rotfl: ...

If you intersperse the books with trinkets and boxes it doesn't matter if they look untidy. ;)

Have a look at these images for some ideas.

"incidentally, I had posted previously about having oilcloth on the floor when I was little, but I was confusing oilcloth and linoleum (no idea what that is? may even be the same thing  ) so I deleted the post, thought I'd best explain just in case anyone saw it and wondered what happened :D"

I think linoleum is just oil cloth, made out of linseed oil"

Linoleum was often found as a floor covering before the cheaper (but less eco-friendly ) vinyl flooring was invented. Now it is an expensive option, but previously it was a cheap and washable alternative to a carpet. It was much more robust than oilcloth, and was only manufactured (whereas it is possible to have a home made oil cloth).

If you like the cup cake theme then I have just had a Morrisons flyer through my door. They do a very nice range which is a lot less than the sort of Nigella range you'll see in Debenhams et al. The range includes: glass worktop saver, apron, set of 3 cake tins, large tray, time for tea set (mug and coaster) £2.99 each or any 2 for £5.00. The tins in particular look lovely looks like a nesting set but doesnt give sizes.

Thought by now I'd be arranging nice stuff on an old pine dresser but its not been delivered yet and still don't know if it'll squeeze through our kitchen door !
Hope it does........emptied the old one out yesterday and I'm surrounded by carrier bags and boxes...........gave me a chance for a good sort out and add to the pile of stuff to be collected by ex foster girls sister but at the moment I don't know which pile is which..................lol
Pine dresser now arriving around 3pm so fingers crossed it fits ! Think OH might just cry if it doesn't.............he wants is more desparately than me !

Pine dresser has arrived !!!!!!! Wasn't quite as much trouble as OH imagined..........now I've got to work out what to put in it:confused: Been a while since I had a nice old one to arrange stuff on.............so, I'll sift through my stuff. Be trial and error I think. Put it on and if I come down tomorrow morning and think its not right then I'll change it.................must do something to clear these boxes and bags from round my feet,
And don't you just hate it when you change a bit of furniture and find there a bit of wall needs painting ? Or are we the only people who paint around something......................lol Well, we did last time and the difference in width means there's a gap about 6 inches wide from floor to ceiling..........luckily I've got some leftover paint...............lol
