Oilcloth is a kind of cloth with a permeable painting oil or paint surface. Thats what wikipedia comes up with. Ah ha found another Oilcloth is a specially treated fabric which is waterproof. Originally, oilcloth was made from oil impregnated canvas, leading to the name “oilcloth,” which is usually used in the modern sense to refer to cotton backed vinyl material. Thats from wisegeek.com, hope that helps.hugsHelenWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

I believe the fabric in Oilcloth was coated with linseed oil. My mother used to have this on the floor, as well as the table before fitted carpets came in.0

It really annoys me that people call PVC and Vinyl covered fabric oilcloth - oilcloth was originally oiled cloth - fabric treated with different combinations of oil, pigment etc to make it waterproof. According to it's function, oilcloth was more or less flexible - so floorcloths not very due to many layers of paint and linseed oil, clothing (oilskins) more so and tablecloths etc more so again.
I was all excited when I read about the availability of oilcloth because I thought that it would be something flexible-I find aprons of pvc cloth to be too rigid; what I really wanted it for, though, was bags. I thought that it would be great to have a waterproof eco-friendly material to make easily foldable shopping bags out of, so that they are easy to carry about "just in case" in a handbag or pocket.0 -
They are not difficult, only thing I would say is to make the triangles bigger than you think you will need them as they don't look so big once they are bordered and sewn up, IYSWIM.
Hope that helps a bit!
It does thanks Pipkin

Just been looking through the photos of your treasures, they are lovely. Does your husband have the same interest in these, or is he out numbered by all the females?0 -
and talking of pvc, I sent off labels for 2 free pvc aprons from Domestos last year. They're full aprons, very plain shape, the fabric is floral and very pretty. I actually don't find them that comfortable to wear although they're great for really messy jobs, so I'm just wondering whether to turn one of them into a bag or 3!
Did anyone else get the aprons? I saw the offer on MSE
incidentally, I had posted previously about having oilcloth on the floor when I was little, but I was confusing oilcloth and linoleum (no idea what that is? may even be the same thing) so I deleted the post, thought I'd best explain just in case anyone saw it and wondered what happened
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I think linoleum is just oil cloth, made out of linseed oil0
