this is my next project. Im going to do it in a sage F&B paint and sand the actual dresser bench top back down and varnish it so its still wood - does anyone have any suggestions which F&B paint colour to use?

That looks very much like Ercol. Lucky you. If it is it's made of ash and elm and stained the dark colour so it might be an idea to sand an unobtrusive bit first to see what colour your can get it down to.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • Hi Jinny. I don't use F&B and have always had good results with Crown Satin wood in Milk white. ;) Just sand the furniture down a bit to key the surface.
Same here.I save Farrow and Ball for all my house woodwork but furniture is just done in whatever is affordable.I like Dulux,Crown and B+Q's own water-based and acryllic eggshells.I like to be able to wash my brushes in water when doing furniture as there is so much stopping and starting between coats.Preparation is more important than the paint itself I find.

LOve that carpet, or is it a rug?
It's carpet. The Laura Ashley one by Brintons. We would never have afforded without a great new for old household insurance policy and previous owners who bought the best quality carpet! Hubby kicked a can of paint all over the landing and stairs when we were decorating. The best accident we have ever had!
  • I'm finding the "chain" charity shops (like Oxfam) increasingly expensive and am tending to get more bargains in the small independent/church based ones. ;)
I agree. In fact there is a stall on our local flea market that sells all unsold ex-charity shop stuff from places like Cancer Research etc.Very ogten they still have the outrageous price labels on and he sells them for 50p each or 3 for £1.The trouble is by the time he's transported them unpacked most things are chipped or have bits missing. It's so sad.I always hate going into some of the charity shops when they are restocking the shelves as everything gets dumped into a box together and you can hear things smashing as they go in. Such a waste.

vintagepleasure - if thats an allottment shed........I could live in that !! It's better than my house !!

Well, I'm currently in between coats of paint...........went for jade green on the plant trough in the end...........painted on side and put it in place........came down this morning and looked at it and felt it was the right colour .,,,,,,,,,so, next lot of paint on..........when thats dry, skeleton leaves I think...............then hopefully OH will get the plank of wood out of the garage I want for the top. I want to get the whole lot done today if I can.

Was bit worried yesterday............lens fell out my glasses and didn't think I'd be able to see to paint, let alone log on to computer but my old glasses are ok (only had new oneslast october) so I'm not blind as a bat like I was when the lens fell out...................lol Varifocals they are and I need them all the time.

If you are thinking of shabbying up your allotment shed take a slook at this set on Flickr

It almost makes me want to get one myself!
My favourite image is this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/olgersdeman/452239037/in/set-72157594170468982/

what a great place - I'd never stop playing around with the shabby chic-ing long enough to do any gardening though!

When my kids were small I used to dream of having a beach hut and decorating it out with interesting bits and pieces, so it would probably have ended up as seaside shabby chic ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

If it's a real antique then I think you should just give it a really good clean and then wax it.I wouldn't sand it or anything as lots of the value in old pieces is in the finish. I have a great recipe for a polished furniture cleaner if you want?

Thank you Vintage that would be great !

Thanks I'm using Crown eggshell Old English White it's a bit harder going than emulsion and wax which is what I normally use but I thought it needed something tougher.

I've painted most of my living room furniture in this Old English White - it's a lovely soft cream. The only thing I have found is that on some surfaces it has chipped a bit easily (funnily enough it has chipped most on the real wood surface) - I've also used it (with the right primer) on MDF and melamine. I tend to put a coat of matt varnish over the top now (and keep a little jam jar of the left over paint for touching up).

Anyway - I wanted to say 'good choice' :D
  • Morning Everyone!

I said I would add pics tonight but I think I'm actually addicted to this thread already before even becoming involved in it! So anyway heres my horrible kitchen (it's not horrible really just not very personal and too modern looking for my taste)

So if you have any wonderful mse ideas to spruce it up shabby chic style I would really appreciate it, thank you girls!

Fingers Crossed those links will work:confused:

As you can probably see, it is tiny and is also has a steeply sloped ceiling. The floor is black slate tiles, but it is such a cold room that I put a cheap rug down to hopefuly warm it up a bit- not very inspiring though.

    Thanks again for any advise.
I think that your kitchen has lots of character already.I love the painted brick walls.I think that your kitchen would work better with a retro chic style. One of my blogging friends Hazel has a good example
    hayskitchen.jpg
That's one of her photos from this post http://sew-eco.blogspot.com/2008/01/goodbye-2007.html
You need to work with what you have as those units are obviously in great condition.I would pretty it up with modern florals and maybe chose a colour for the walls like Hazel has. Some bunting along one wall would soften it and a blackboard (or two!) Get some of your prettiest crockery on show and bring some stronger accents colours in there. You'll need something like a splash of red to balance the black of the tiles. That way they won't stand out against your other things.
    Hope that this helps.

there is a little carboot sale that starts at 11.30am and is only on for a few moths of the year... so we are just finishing our cuppa's and going to have a nose.... i love this carboot sale... there is only about 15 - 20 cars there, and its a nice lazy sunday strolling round a field without being elbowed when you look at the carbboters items.... it is very hit and miss and sometimes the carbooters are a bit ott with their prices.... so if i get anything i will psot pics 9 dont hold your breath lol...)
