Okay, have begun attackng the chair.
    How weird is this:

So it appears to have been upholstered three times!
I'm still digging, and it's hard getting all the staples out. Do you all want to be updated on this project - I'm not sure if it counts as shabby chic for this thread (though I am going to shabby chic it). Alternatively I could pm you like mad, NEgirl, as you got me into this :rotfl:and I'm going to need loads of advice.

There's only one charity shop of the seven in our town that sells fabric remnants:confused:. I find car boot sales can be quite good, and clothes as NE girl said. Someone else said (I think) that they had asked on freecycle - might be worth a try?

thanks, im going to keep trying the charity shops anyway and will look at the clothes too, im hoping to go to car boot sale to have a look round soon with NEgirl (my sis!) just want to find someone selling a big pile of fabric for 50p or something....not too much to ask is it?! :)
  • Loving hearing about all of the bargains and seeing all these fab photos.
That sewing machine is just like one I picked up in a charity shop for about £15 - maybe even more, so you certainly got a bargain there.
VintagePleasure, as ever I love everything you got - that Woods Ware is such a bargain.

I think we should all meet up on mass and do the thrift shops out of business for a day:rolleyes::rotfl:.

Oh and icandream/ice cream, I am looking forward to updates on the chair.

Oh and thanks everyone for the shoe storage advice!
Anyone fancy buying my degree? It will only cost you £18k.

Try mentioning to the people who work there what you are looking for.Everytime you go in make sure you cheerfully ask and try and strike up a converstaion with them so they remember you! Sometimes they just throw stuff out that they think won't sell but will happily keep a hold of things for you. They just have to know that you are serious and worth pleasing! I struggled for ages to get one of my charity shops to keep hold of tablecloths etc that were slightly damaged.I had to show them what I would use it for so they understood what I was after. It's still hit and miss though as alot of charity shops have such a high turnover of staff and the stuff that goes on sale is very dependant on their opinion of what has value and what doesn't. You might be better volunteering with a charity shop for a while. It helps them and it helps you. I am definitely going to when I have time.

Icecream (I know that's not your name but it is to me!)
I would love to see updates of the chair too.

here are some photos.. sorry if there is too many but i have been meaning to post photos but been sooo busy...

first one is the dumb waiter, not finished yet, as i am waiting for a sample of cath kidston wall paper to see if its the right colour so i can line it

apart from the blue spotted vase which i paid a £1 for everything else has come into work, in the rag bags....

the material is a white bed sheet with lovely roses... the other 2 are pillow cases.... the sheet i am going to cut up and have chic cleaning rags:D the pillow cases i am either going to make 'fake t towels' for decoration only, or make a rag bag and plastic bag holder

the other things are some teddies etc which i just fell in love with as soon as i seen them, then there are 2 beautifull 1950's pj/nightie cases. then the thing i REALLY love is the retro sew'ers thing with the measuring pape and detachable scissors.... and a cushion part to put your pins etc.... soooooo retro chic....

I took a liking to this230.228.1.3.jpgsort of storage when I saw something similar in Ikea, but didn't/wouldn't pay £40 odd for it. Then I saw one in a charity shop for a tenner & it holds some of our 'everyday' shoes in the hall. Maybe I'll paint it one day, but I like the wood for now.

Anyone remember a programme called 'Change That'? Used to love that, & a similar one that used to be on BBC1 to rival 'This Morning' but was more craft & :money: orientated:o
Think it was on one of those that they suggested collecting the cardboard shoe boxes & painting them or covering with fabric, to use for various storage solutions. Many shoe shops will give them away, & you could put a photo of the item on the outside of the box for easy identification. They looked good stood along the bottom of a built in wardrobe cuz they were matched to the decor; another was a high shelf in a kitchen with the lace edging & the boxes covered in red gingham to match the curtains & held spices, cookie cutters etc.

We started doing something similar in a pre-school, so the kiddies could 'help themselves' to various art & craft supplies....would work well in a toddlers bedroom too, cuz the boxes are cheap enough to replace when they get tatty.
