Re the shoe storage, I bought several cheap wooden shoe racks from our local B&Q and hubby stacked them on top of each other and screwed them together. I've now run out of space and need to add another but at least my shoes are all in one place. I think each unit was about £8.

I don't know if its any help but for years Croft Mill have supplied remnants. www.croftmill.co.uk. They provide a wicked brochure that always has me in stitches (forgive the pun) with its very witty descriptions. I haven't looked at their web site but assume you can order a brochure via it. If not the phone number is 01282 869625. As an example, in an old oct/nov 2007 brochure they are selling 94" wide poly/cotton sheeting for £1.00 per metre.

There's only one charity shop of the seven in our town that sells fabric remnants:confused:. I find car boot sales can be quite good, and clothes as NE girl said. Someone else said (I think) that they had asked on freecycle - might be worth a try?

2421987738_d41a752bfc_m.jpg Here is my latest bargain, curtesy of my auction mad husband. This little gem cost 2 pounds!! I am a real newbie to sewing and have spent the day `playing` with it. I have managed to wind the bobbin up (felt like singing the nursery rhyme while i was doing it) also managed to thread the cotton and bobbin, but cant seem to get the stitching going to actually sew:confused: ,Have started making a bunting but would love to do alot more.

Oh fab, aren't they great! If you google the 'singer sewing machine' and the serial number it should date your machine for you - mine was 'released' on June 21st 1924!! AND it still works!! AND it doesn't need electricity!!

The cotton comes out of the needle and seems to tangle near the bobbin. I havent managed to get any stitches done yet.
