csarina the bed quilt is lovely. I'm going to go for this look when I change the bedroom decor.
Can I ask you about your sewing machine? Is it a 'janome' one? I had a toyota I bought brand new a few years ago. I just couldn't get used to it at all, had loads of different stitches etc and it was a pain for me to thread. Just too fandangled. The only thing I made on it was curtains for our camper! Well I sold it on ebay for next to nothing as it was just in the bedroom mocking me :D but I do want a really simple sewing machine that even I could use. Don't want to do fancy stitches or anything, just straight lines :D Would you recommend your make or is it a very technical one. Hope you don't mind me asking. Thank you :D

Yes my nachine is a janome, the one in the picture is the top of the range 11000 which embroiders as well as sews.

They make a number of basic machines, but I would strongly recommend that you buy one with more stitches than you think you are going to use, because believe me you will find yourself using them. The secret is to read through the instruction book and then get yourself some cheap material and sew each of the stitches, with a machine like the 4800 you can combine stiutches together to make patterns and some of the embroidery sitcthes...........make sure you use the right needle for the fabric, Janome make a blue tip needle it is a great needle.........there are also several sites on Yahoo hat deal with people who have Janome machines and you get some great hints there.

What I suggest to people is that you go to a dealer, take with you the type of fabrics you like to sew with and try out the machines and find out which one you like the best. The computerised machines are very easy to operate and Janome make very user friendly ones..........I also have a 4800 as well just in case my 11000 does not behave. It really all depends on how much money you want to spend.......if you PM me I may be able to help you a litle more.....in the meantime have a look at the Janome site Janome.co.uk and have a look at the different machines.

I admit to being biased towards Janome machines, I worked for them as a demonstrator for quite a while some years back...........many of the machines you see ubder different names are manufactured by Janome under licience including what used to be the rolls royce of machines Bernina.................

Csarina, I really love the quilt and the bed head too. And you’ve given me a great idea for my sewing corner, stacking a shelf unit like that will save me a lot of floor space! Thanks for sharing! ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • Thanks for your reply csarina I'll definately have a look at the website. That's a good idea about taking fabric to try. Thanks very much. I have a more definate idea now what to look for. :D
Thanks for the great tips too. If you worked for them and you have the machines that's good enough recommendation for me.

Attention shabby chic'ers, this morning I was searching for the high pressure cleaner to do the paving in preparation for putting the house on the market. As I scrabbled among the shelves in the garage, something caught my eye....

Right at the back was something I bought in France from their equivalent of a boot sale. It is one of those enamel things they put on the wall, they have a bar to hang cooking utensils on. It is very old and slightly worn and a little rusty on some corners but it looks fab. I've ordered some hooks to hang the new kitchen utensils mil bought us for Christmas. It is going to look really nice and I'm certainly not leaving it behind.

I didn't find the high pressure cleaner - another day ;)
  • Ooh a 'treasure find'. What a nice surprise.:D

Hi everyone, Ive followed this thread from the start as I too love all things Shabby Chic. I don't know how to do links (maybe someone would be kind enough to do one in another post?) but there is a book I have which has loads of really pretty things to make in it, It is called 'Sew Pretty Homestyle' and is available on amazon.

I haven't made anything yet, but when I do, you will be the first to see it!

I had a bargain buy, last night a vintage 1930's bedspread for 99p in dark pink and white - Im just about to start decorating my little girls room, so I'm hoping to use it in there.

  • This thread is great - thank you. My own home is rather more functional than chic - something I'm determined to change now that I no longer work outside the home.

My mother is fantastic at the shabby chic look (though she'd have a pink fit to hear it described as such). She's collected quite an ecletic mix of items over the years and manages to throw them together effortlessly to create a really stylish (if cluttered home).

I'm going to see if she will let me take some photos to put on here - I'll see if I can take one of the victorian cast iron range she installed in her living room.

Actually, I've just realised this makes me sound like a schoolgirl asking her mum's permission when in fact I'm 48 and she's nearly 70!:rotfl:

Thanks for all the wonderful pictures. I'll try and do some tomorrow of my home. I've been away for a few days and have just spent time catching up
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

Ooh please do the photos, we would all, I am sure love to see them. :j I love an eclectic look, one of my young relations has a house like this, she just puts things together without any effort, looks homely and stylish and lived in.

I like my house but I do have trouble doing finishing touches.
