You just use the beeswax finish after you sanded down the table top, you don't put that on a painted surface. I would imagine anyway.

Whoops I didn't make myself clear. Sand down pine table top and beeswax it, then paint the legs cream oil eggshell. Sounds weird but there is a lot of country style furniture like that.

If you decided to paint it all, you could give it a protective coat of clear polyurethane varnish, I think this stops any marks spoiling the top. My friend has a table made from old pine ( unpainted ) and she does this and it works well. I think you can get a matt finish, not sure though.

Yay!!! Thats fantastic that idea, thank you sooooo much. That way I can get my cream painted furniture but the top will still match the units until I decide what to do with them. You are a genious.
(would I need to sand the legs etc before painting or just whack it on?)

I would sand the legs, paint goes on much better that way.

  • Ive found these sites to be cheaper than the Typhoon site, and also cheaper than ebay on some things. Theres loads of red things, including a range of pie dishes and things. I havent ordered from Typhoon so I cant help there, but I love their range. Youre lucky with the red things, they seem to do the most in that colour.

    Hi

Id love a multi coloured pastel dinner service but cant quite find one I like. This would be ideal http://www.typhooneurope.com/TyphoonSite/category/Clearance/ but they only have one size of plates and Id need dinner plates and small plates, but this is the kind of thing Im after. Has anyone seen any around?

Ikea City range is available in plae green, turquoise, lilac and gold:

You could chose all the same or some of each.
If you like the shabby chic "co-ordinating but not the same" look then don't forget charity shops and sales in other shops - if you limit yourself to white or cream plus two or three colours then you can pick up a few plates or a cup here and there and get a really unique service over time. Carry a colour swatch eg bit of paper with the paint from the walls, bit of gingham material you want or whatever with you in a small envelope at all times. That way if you see something you like you can see if it matches - it also makes it easier to choose things in the same shade but a different tone.

My " everyday" stuff is white, so I have plates and bowls from Ikea, a pound shop, Woolworths, a House of Fraser sale. Its amazing how many different shades of white there are, but my thinking is that as there are a couple of shades already, if anything breaks I can buy a replacement and it won't matte if it is not exact.

I think that you could do the same thing but maybe add in a colour or two - it's a really cheap way of getting something that looks as though it was put together by a magazine stylist (well, I think so!)

chinatown - if you want a sort of matt look to your painting leave it once you've painted it but it you want to give it a bit of a 'grubby' look a bit of dark oak polish would work. Wipe it on with a cloth, leave it to dry for a bit then buff it up.
Our pine table hasn't been treated at all on the top.......we just scrub it down every little while. The whole table was stripped pine but the legs were waxed with dark oak so it has an 'aged' look even though OH made it all out of brand new pine.
Its really a matter of personal taste..........try a bit on an old piece of wood if you've no odd pieces oof furniture to test out.
    Good luck.

OH has gone to his boss's shop to measure a big stripped pine dresser.........he's measured out doorways so its obviously a bit on the deep side.................I haven't seen it but it sounds lovely so hope it will fit............be a good valentines pressie:j

  • csarina the bed quilt is lovely. I'm going to go for this look when I change the bedroom decor.
Can I ask you about your sewing machine? Is it a 'janome' one? I had a toyota I bought brand new a few years ago. I just couldn't get used to it at all, had loads of different stitches etc and it was a pain for me to thread. Just too fandangled. The only thing I made on it was curtains for our camper! Well I sold it on ebay for next to nothing as it was just in the bedroom mocking me :D but I do want a really simple sewing machine that even I could use. Don't want to do fancy stitches or anything, just straight lines :D Would you recommend your make or is it a very technical one. Hope you don't mind me asking. Thank you :D
