Please can someone help me out with advice on sealing painted furniture. Am I right in thinking that you can seal with a clear varnish first, then wax on top of the varnish? I would have thought that once you put the varnish on the wax wouldn't have much effect....but I don't know. Also, what type of wax do you use? Thanks for any help. Last night I decided I would try to 'distress' the dresser, but it didn't look quite right so I have been painting back over it again:rolleyes:AMAZON SELLERS CLUB MEMBER 0082 :hello:0

Wax can be enough to seal the wood if it's not going to get much use but if you are waxing and varnishing I would wax first. You can use ordinary beeswax (just build it up in layers and rub into the wood or a stained wax for a bit of colour then coat with a clear matt varnish.
Just found this link which might be useful.0 -
I'm getting a little confused. I'm painting my dresser with a acrylic eggshell paint, so do I also need to wax it?We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0

Me too vivw - there's more to this furniture painting than I thought! I'm using the C & R paint same as you, I just feel that with the rough treatment it will get here I will need to protect it a bit - 4 kids and 2 dogs!
Are you doing a distressed finish or just even colour?AMAZON SELLERS CLUB MEMBER 0082 :hello:0 -

Viv I would say no as eggshell to my mind is already sealed, wax may give it a softer look if that's what you wnat.
I've painted furniture with ordinary emulsion paint then waxed it and it gives a nice soft finish but not one for hard wear my litle side table has done quite well and has had vases of flowers, ashtrays and little hands and toys.
Haribo don't you think waxing first would repel the varnish?
Love this thread we need more picturesWomen and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

I don't think so. My fireplace is stripped pine and I just waxed it. My dresser is just satin wood paint with no wax and the new cabinet is just emusion with clear matt varnish. So I've never used wax and paint together.0 -
Thats good, because I didn't think I would have to wax it. It won't get much rough treatment as there is only myself and OH here nowadays. We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0
