If you are using an oil based paint then there isn't any need to varnish but a coat of wax does gives extra protection and also feels nice to the touch. If you have used a water based eggshell or acryllic paint then you can use a waterbased or acryllic varnish (oil based ones yellow with age)to give further protection then a coat of wax over the top. The varnish would be enough protection but the wa does give a nicer finish. Please can someone help me out with advice on sealing painted furniture. Am I right in thinking that you can seal with a clear varnish first, then wax on top of the varnish? I would have thought that once you put the varnish on the wax wouldn't have much effect....but I don't know. Also, what type of wax do you use? Thanks for any help. Last night I decided I would try to 'distress' the dresser, but it didn't look quite right so I have been painting back over it again:rolleyes:
I would definitely varnish and wax if the paint finish is emulsion.
The wax just gives you a little more protection and can easily be reapplied if needed.
If you use wax first then you would have a problem with the varnish adhering properly.I wouldn't recommend varnishing over wax at all. There really would be no point.0 -
