Hey, thanks Jinny: Vintagepleasure had posted a link to the pic (big big thanks VP), but I hadn't looked at the blog it came from (I'm afraid I'm a little bit long in the tooth, and am only just starting to understand what blogs are: one day I'll try and be brave enough to work out how to post comments, as they are a source of such wonderful ideas). Is this your blog? It's great: it's talking me through it.
    Thank you.
Oh no its not my blog (i wish) just thought it would help. Sorry to VP didnt realise you had posted this pic. I love this thread and every clever person on it that posts their lovely projects. I have some lovely stuff I want to paint like a cane conservatry suite I rescued from a skip and orange pine bedroom furniture given by a friend. I am going to wait till I can afford the Farrow and Ball paint though. No spare cash at the mo( I asked my local diy shop if he sold Cannon and Ball paint heehe:o ) dont know if anyone near Newcastle upon Tyne sells it.

We started in the mid height of the wall to one side and just built it up as we went along.Put your favourite design at head height so that takes your eye. Then remember to spread the colours out all over the wall. That way you don't focus too much in one place. We pasted over the top of pieces as opposed to butting up.Also we varied the sizes of the pieces.
Just take your time and keep stepping back to get the effect. Also use a bit
of blu-tac to pin pieces up and move them around a little.
Try to remember the whole scheme but just work in smallish areas so that you don't get overwhelmed.
    Here's what we did

http://www.flickr.com/photos/vintage_pleasure/419115442/ and here's the book that inspired us http://www.flickr.com/photos/vintage_pleasure/365043323/
Save them and print them out if you like and then you can keep having a look.

Thanks for all the helpful tips, Vintagepleasure: I'm cutting at the moment, and the blu-tac is a brilliant suggestion. I really hope you don't mind my pinching your idea. It's such an inspiration. Thanks for the links: I'd bookmarked these already and was staring at them at 7am this morning! x

I've got an old ship's figurehead (lifesize) in my dining room - DH only let me have her because she's got a rather large chest! :D

Have you read Sue Monk Kidd's bestseller, 'The Secret Life of Bees'? They had a ship's figurehead in the living room, a central 'character' in the story. I just Googled it and it's coming out as a film in 2009. I tried to PM you but apparently it's not possible, so apologies that this refers to a post on page 5, but I have only just started reading this thread.

    Hi All,

    I
My buy of the day though was a book that I have been after for ages and I would recommend you ALL go out and buy it :)

It is called Sew Pretty Homestyle http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sew-Pretty-Homestyle-Irresistible-Projects/dp/0715327496/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205622767&sr=8-1

As I read this i thought I recognise that title glanced over to my bench and ...I got out of library on Friday!!! Very Moneysaving of me!!! It is really lovely with lots of projects, some of it even looks within my ability!!!
Today I intend to get 1 coat of Dimity onto that shelf unit I picked up nearly 2weeks ago...its primed and rubbed down - I just can't seem to juggle my time effectively!!!
How do you all do it!!?? I know I am not the only 1 here with 4 children, my youngest is only 3 months and still needs feeding several times in day (which only I can do;) ), so thats my excuse!!!
I am getting a bit frustrated that all my ideas (ok other peoples ideas!!!) are having to stay in my head cos of running out of time!!

The library copy I got of that book kept oddly mentioning "Vlislene" in the supplies needed lists. The copy I looked at in Waterstones was translated properly so watch out for that! (I can't remember what Vlislene was now but think it might have been felt)...I have 5 children and spend more time viewing other peoples projects than doing my own! I have been in this house over 4 years and have so much to finish. I have another 18 months until the youngest is at school full time and will then be able to crack on! I find if I start anything and have to stop it never gets finished. I say enjoy your little ones, there is plenty of time for the house to look nice later on!!

There are stockists of F&B paint in Newcastle "Fred Williamson & son Ltd Unit 2 Boyd st. Shieldfield and other places, also in Morpeth in Tallantyres wallpaper shop on Newgate street. Just go to the website and follow the links and you will see all the stockists.

Facepainter is right: enjoy the little ones, and don't be hard on yourself. My youngest is now 7 (have 3 myself), and it's only when he started school properly that I began to have a little more time to do things. Good grief, in the first year I had three, my ds cried all the time, I felt like crying all the time, and I felt a complete failure as everyone else appeared to cope so much better.Older and wiser (ha ha, strike that out!), I now realize that's so not the case. At 3-months, they take all your time and attention.
Right, I've taken a break from paper cutting. My poor back! Off to do more...

My youngest has been at school full time for over a year now and I still can't find the time to do all the things I have in my head!
