  • I have a friend who, when she got divorced, decoupaged her wedding invitations, order of service and wedding photos on to her bin. :D

I have to say her kitchen is simple but to die for.............:p

Wow, there's money in shabby chic! I loved the table painted white that was in the 2nd pic., the table in the daughter's bedroom and the stool in the bathroom. They are all very achievable and could be done cheaply.

I'm not keen on things open e.g. shelves in the kitchen. I don't think much cooking goes on in that kitchen as the items on the shelves and the shelves would need washing every week. I prefer clothes in a wardrobe - and the wardrobe can be shabby chic'ed up.

However, if offered the house I wouldn't be saying no because I don't like .............. :p

I totally agree, in my first house some 30+ years ago, I had open shelves and everything on display and everything did need washing on a very regular basis (and I didn't have a dishwasher in those days:p ). Now everything is kept in cupboards except the breadmaker and Kenwood which I made covers for! I like a clean, tidy and dust free environment.

We've got a mixture of open shelves and cupboards.........more a case of thats what the furniture was like when we bought it so we learned to live with it.

Back to decoupage...........I bought a cheap box (£1).....about 15 inches tall with a lid and pasted on a lot of old adverts I printed off, stained them with dark oak wood stain to give them a bit more age, then varnished it. Vase (50p) with dried flowers stands on it and its a good 'hidey hole' from the kids........they've no idea the top comes off..................lol

I was just catching up on here and griinning whilst thinking to myself that perhaps I could be described as shabby chic! Most of my clothes are either bought in a sale or from a Charity Shop - so I'm probably shabby but not sure about chic ! :D

    simplicity is key

  • I'd love to join this thread. Just covered some junk shop find (but good) old kitchen chairs with some fabric I already had - really pleased with the result. Its amazing what a bit of paint and a staple gun can achieve!Currently working my way around the house redecorating as have lived here for ten years now and things were looking shabby rather than chic. Have had some great junk shop finds over the years including a lovely fire surround in dark wood which was covered in mud and had white waterstain 'rings' on the mantel re- furbished and now in pride of place cost £78 plus wood restorer and stain and some elbow grease. Have also been lucky enough to be given some lovely pieces by friends/relatives again they needed a bit of TLC and a think about how to use them. EG had some old armchairs offered by an Aunt covered in truly hideous green synthetic fabric but good shape etc. Our sofa and chairs were showing signs of wear after kids/dog/cats etc so had the chairs, sofa and a footstool covered in fabric from Dunelm by a local person total cost of under £400 really pleased with the result.
Doing a boring job but thinking of the money!!
