Yes I fancied some of that DGS but I was not paying that price for a 7 year old, he'll probably get it caught on something and ruin it.

Wowee Β£300! I have the current Knit Now, the jumper I liked was Β£60 to knit in my medium size and I was still looking for yarn to substitute! Maybe I will just go ahead and call it a bargain.

I have tackled and completed my UFOs including lengthening the sleeves and body on a top down jumper. Currently knitting a Postman Pat jumper (age 2 yrs) and a green lacy one (age 3 yrs). I've had the green wool for a while and this is the third pattern I've started with it but I'm still not sold, - but not sure I can face unravelling it again.
Which jumper is it that you like?Β  If it doesn't have a name, what page is it on?Β  Please share.Β  (I have an on-line subscription to Knit Now.)

Sorry just catching up with the thread! It is called the Parkside Pullover. Page 62 of issue 120.

Ooohhh... Β I like that jumper. Β  The specified yarn is 4 ply in a 350m/100g put-up so you’d need 1,400m. Β You could buy 4x100g balls of a decent, plain coloured sock yarn and still have change from Β£30. Β Blacksheep Wools are selling WYS Signature Sock yarn for Β£6.99 per 100g, while Hobbycraft sell it for Β£7.50 but you can get a Β£5-off voucher each birthday if you join their club. Β Deramores are selling it for Β£5.83 this week. Β They also Β sell Regia Uni (plain coloured) for Β£8.35. Β (Actually, I’d take a good look at Blacksheep, they always have brilliant offers. Β They get end-of-range clearance lines from Sublime, Rowan, etc.)

    HTH

ah, now you might be able to help me. The waistcoat I'm planning to tackle as my next 'big' project. It's a very old and tatty pattern, and it says it needs 16 x 25g balls of something particular in my size, can't instantly find it so don't know what but it was a wool / wool mix.Β

I have 8 x 50g balls of something different, BUT what I have is a cotton mix, and definitely knits shorter than eg the cardigan yarn.Β

Now, I could do contrasting rib / pocket inserts, but is there a way of working out how far the yarn is going to go before I start the bottom ribbing?Β

    < big deep breath >

    Grab your calculator.

It’s all down to the yardage required and the gauge you get when you knit your tension square. Β Find the pattern @Savvy_Sue and make a note of the brand, etc, of the yarn plus the tension given in the pattern. Β If the pattern doesn’t mention the yards per ball, we can look it up on Ravelry. Β Then it’s a case of multiplying that by the number of balls specified for your size, to get the total yardage required. Β Β

Once you’ve got that, we can look at your substitute. Β  How many metres do you get per ball? Β Divide the total yardage calculated above by the metres per ball to calculate how many balls you need. Β Are you short? Β If so, by how many balls? Β

What tension does the ball band specify? Β Is it in the same ballpark as the tension given in the pattern? Β Knit a tension square based on the needles etc, given in the pattern. Β Measure the outside then wash it. Β Does it change dimensions once dry? Β Measure your tension. Β If you’re out by a stitch per 4 inches, then you can compensate by changing up/down needle sizes. Β  If your gauge is considerably off, then you’ve got a bigger issue than just yardage, because you’ll have to recalculate the pattern to fit your gauge.Β

    HTH.

I've got a pair of wine red socks ready to Kitchener. I've got a pair of black socks as far as the gusset, I've got a pair of Lopi socks ready to turn heels, I've got a black & turquiose fair isle cardigan done up to the shoulders, and I've got enough squares for half a Lopi blanket done... Where do I get some of those wee elf things who will finish it all through the night while I'm sleeping?
