  • Wowee £300! I have the current Knit Now, the jumper I liked was £60 to knit in my medium size and I was still looking for yarn to substitute! Maybe I will just go ahead and call it a bargain.

I have tackled and completed my UFOs including lengthening the sleeves and body on a top down jumper. Currently knitting a Postman Pat jumper (age 2 yrs) and a green lacy one (age 3 yrs). I've had the green wool for a while and this is the third pattern I've started with it but I'm still not sold, - but not sure I can face unravelling it again.

Which jumper is it that you like?  If it doesn't have a name, what page is it on?  Please share.  (I have an on-line subscription to Knit Now.)

    Welcome to Socktober everybody!

Anyone care to join me in setting a sock knitting goal for October?  Mine is to finish the pair of socks that have been on my needles since February.  I am half way through the leg of the second sock.

  • Thanks for the tip about Cast On @PipneyJane 😀  Given the number of outstanding projects I have to do, I don’t think I can join you in Socktober, but I’d love to see what you and other people make. Somewhere I have half a sock knitted, and I probably need to add that to the list of projects to be completed!

Socktober sounds really tempting...But, like Polly, Ive got outstanding projects plus house declutter, plus allotment.  Also like Polly though, i'd love to see what everyone else is making.

I have finished knitting the squares for my blanket. Over 300. I'm just knitting a monkey and then a polar bear. then I start the mammoth task of sewing over 300 squares together and adding a few things like flowers, hearts, butterflies and ladybirds. I have some yarn coming tomorrow to make a border and then I start knitting for Christmas.

Last year I knitted an Aran sweater for my youngest son (54 in chest) and the wool cost me Euro 100, so I can understand the £300, depending on the yarn used......silk or cashmere are very expensive.

I try to use natural fibres whenever possible but they are costly.

My guess is that you paid a little over €5 per 50g ball and used close to 20 balls.  (Your son is a strapping lad.)  To me, that’s a reasonable price per ball for what you are getting.  When you factor in that it will have taken around 100 hours to knit, it works out to €1/hour material cost, to work with something you enjoy.  At the moment, I budget £20/month for “knitting/crochet/craft”, so that’d be half a year’s budget spent for about half year’s knitting (if £1=€1).

Given how much natural fibre based yarn costs, it is ironic that the vast majority of British wool is deemed worthless so costs more to shear than its sale price.

I do have some more sock wool, but am determined to finish the cardigan (because I suspect I will wear it A Lot!) and I picked up a waistcoat pattern in a charity shop the other day for which I have some nice wool just waiting ...

Might do some more hand-warmers, ready for working with the windows open!
