I have tried urban poncho on this morning and am over the moon. It is loose and a very comfortable overtop. It has a loose cowl neck which can be rolled down and has just one fastening place on each side, two edges held together in a two button sandwich. I made mine in rough and ready, bit lumpy, home spun shetland and it looks very good but I can see this as an ideal easy knit for anyone who needs to make a present for someone who likes a bit of easy on/off warmth. I can see me using it often, over a shirt, long sleeved t shirt, sweatshirt, thin jumper.
I am set to knit this afternoon, stunning sunny day so have had some sun but will be ready to relax at 3 in front of a film. Ahhhh bliss
Yes Maryb, quality has gone down all over the place, cost cutting as always
Just a quickie ac085, we always made small baby clothes in the old days on normal two needles and then sewed up the seams. I only ever remember dpns being used for socks.

I was wondering if anyone here can help.
I am looking to knit a baby/premie cardigan. I don't mind the size as I will probably donate/gift it.
I have been knitting few years and can inc, dec, slip stitch, kfb etc.
I have used mattress stitch for seaming so have a little experience in seaming.
I don't know how to use dpn's and don't have a circular needle small enough for a baby.
Do you know any good (free) patterns that I can use for a simple baby cardi?
I want it to be simple as I will knitting to relax/while watching tv
I am likely to be using DK or Aran weight.
Thanks in advance

ac085 this is for premis
I cut it down to 27 stitches with double knitting because there are far more very tiny babies needing tiny clothing. Many are as small as 5 or 600g.
No way could you put such a tiny baby in aran wool. Most hospitals prefer synthetic yarns as some babies are allergic to wool and synthetics are easier to wash.
This is all in one I use size 3 3/4mm needles or smaller depending on the thickness of the yarn.

I've officially gone round the bend...signed up for a KAL to knit a sweater (of at least 50,000 stitches in construction) from November 1 to November 30.
10am and I still need to cast on. :eek:0 -
Ended up taking back the Uniqlo jumper - it was so very thin compared to previous years' quality you could see the stripes of my shirt underneath - and it was a pale pink stripe so not obtrusive.
So back to the knitting. I want a pale grey jumper, which is such a useful neutral as it goes with black and navy (I always mean to plump for black OR navy but always end up with stuff in both colours) and a Shetland type wool would be good. I might order a cone of 2ply jumper weight from Jamieson and Smith since it seems to be half the price of the balls. It says it can be used for hand knitting but you have to wash the oil out at the end. Has anyone used this for hand knitting? Does it feel greasy as you knit?It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Hi Mary,
I've hand-knit with it a lot and never noticed it greasy - it looks, feels and knits to me like the individual balls.
edited to add i get my from Jamieson & Smith, Shetland Wool Brokers
http://www.shetlandwoolbrokers.co.uk/0 -
maryb, I used exactly that wool whenI had knitting machines. The grease helps the yarn to run smoothly but it feels coarse as you knit and is a bit smelly. It becomes soft when the grease is out. A tension square must be made and must be washed and lightly pressed exactly like the garment. If you can do the square accurately then the cone would indeed be a better buy. Personally it would take me a year of boredom, knitting 2 ply into a ladies jumper is not fun0

Thank you both so much, that's really helpful I agree, it won't be the most interesting to knit but I'm actually looking for something fairly mindless. I knitted one for DD a few years back in their 2 ply and it was quite soothing when I needed to occupy myself but couldn't read. Also I want to test out a few techniques such as short rows and tubular cast on/cast off and this would be a good vehicleIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
