On clearing out cupboards I have come accross 4 Balls of Wendy Shimmer wool and 4 balls of Wendy Cosmic. I used these to knit scarves some years ago but cannot find patterns at all and was wondering if anyone had one and would be able to let me know details. If I remember correct I used both wools at the same time andd it only took a ball of each, but I have not idea how many stitches/kneedle sizes and how long etc.

First of all: what a great find! Go to ravelry.com and looks for scarves under "patterns". There are many free patterns, and most of them will have specs on how much yarn you may need and such. Good luck.

  • I knitted a baby hat this weekend - I'm stupidly proud of myself as I mastered the dpn's :D I don't know how to post a picture though

I've now started a scarf for my friends birthday which I'll embellish with some knitted flowers

Just hopping into this thread as I'm trying learn to crochet as a new hobby while pregnant this winter!

All you guys seem so expert... How did you learn originally? I'm thinking a combination of books, the web and maybe a course?!

I tried books but couldn't get it so went to a class. I have since though discovered that Youtube has some great videos - try crochetgeek's ones. She is American though, so uses American terms rather than British.

Do you want actual wool 'wool', or are you happy to use wool blend 'wool' or even acrylic 'wool'? If you are happy to practice with the cheap stuff then places like Poundland and Aldi often have these cheap. Also e-bay is good. I live at the opposite end of the country though so not so sure about local yarn shops in your area.

There is a crochet thread on Old Style somewhere, if you could find that you might get some more ideas here. Some of us crochet but this thread is mainly knitting.

would this work for a scarf - it says double knitting- what does that mean?

    and this one? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PATONS-PURE-WOOL-CREPE-KNITTING-YARN-D-K-/140867184252?pt=UK_Crafts_Knitting_Crochet_EH&hash=item20cc56a67c

if any good I will bid for them. Will pop to Aldi and get a cheap one to practice on I think

In this country we tend to refer to it all as wool, Americans say yarn lol.
Basically for a scarf you'd want something warm, but also something that will wash well, so I'd suggest maybe a wool/acrylic (synthetic) blend. Or you could try one of the fancy ruffle type scarves, though they are a bit finicky.
You could also join ravelry.com- free to join, loads of patterns to search and download (free and paid). We have a MSE group on there too. Perhaps find a pattern you like and then see what yarn is suggested for it?
