Hi all, spent a lot of time reading the entire thread over the past couple of weeks and thought it was time for me to introduce myself! My gran taught me to knit when I was a young'en and my barbies had plenty of scarves and blankets (all in knit stitch!) but then I got too 'cool' to knit and gave Gran her needles back.

Fast forward fifteen or so years and my friend tells me she's expecting baby number 2 (I started a blanket for her first but he was born before I finished it so I gave up) and now I think I'm addicted.

Currently knitting the little one a onsie/sleepsuit type thing in sirdar snowdrop (or it could be snowflake) for Christmas, I've just got to do the ribbing on the hood and then the dreaded sewing up. Also started a blanket for myself in a multicoloured chunky wool, I can't remember what it's called but it's soooooo soft!

After seeing all your posts I think my next project is going to be socks, I've looked at Silva's tutorial and it seems straight forward but I'm sure there'll be more swearing and unpicking than actual knitting but I'll give it a go!

Sorry for the super long post but I just wanted to pop in and say hi, and I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time in this thread!

A ridiculously quick one week knit from Boo! Knits and a slightly more ridiculous pumkpin hat. The OH is now politely enquiring when I intend doing some housework.

Wow, your shawl looks gosmar thin. It's splendid. I like the pumpkin hat, nice and cheerful for the winter. Housework, what's that then:D

Even though we've just had a massive delivery from Kemps (thanks to whoever mentioned that a while back. Sadly I don't think my bank account likes the site as much as I do!) My mum wants to go to a local wool shop she's just found out about tomorrow, I'm not complaining because I'll be able to pick up something to attempt to make my socks out off.
I've been reading Silvers sock tutorial but I can't see anywhere that says how much yarn I'll need, so can anyone tell me how many yards/metres/balls I'll need? I'm planning to get proper sock yarn, and I'm a ladies size 6 shoe if that helps?

If you get a 4 ply wool blend specific sock yarn they tend to come in 50g or 100g balls, so you'll need two of the 50g ones or one of the 100g one. If you get a 6ply sock wool you might need more like 150g total.

Hi, well i purchased everything I needed yesterday to begin knitting my first ever socks for myself (size 6), I got Number 3 DPS and 100g of King Cole Zig Zag wool which came with a free pattern. I started yesterday evening and just had one problem where I had to undo it and start again (although I had only done about 5 rows before I realised it wasn't right) I am now about half way down the leg and loving it so far!!! Thank you for all your help and suggestions!!

Thank you. Is there any specific brand of sock yarn you'd recommend?

The Shawl is Heaven Scent, its only the second lace shawl I've ever done and it was ridiculously easy to do. Even the beaded bits were easy. I didn't have the proper equipment for it so used a couple of inches of fishing line. I used 32g of laceweight something or other that was lurking in the back of a cupboard and I blocked it using water, washing up liquid, car boot sale kids playmats and ordinary dressmakers pins.
