  • I'm terrified of charted patterns too and have never attempted one. I have always thought at some time in the future I would tackle one but transcribe it first and get my knitting guru to check it over for me.

My next project is gonna be a pair of socks I think, but I'm gonna attempt a pair that are knitted flat first. Am having some trouble finding a basic pattern for these. I've tried on Ravelry, but thought I would mention it here in case anyone knew of a pattern?

Nuala....a blanket knitted totally in either moss st or garter stitch can be very attractive....if you use one of the multicoloured wools it will be even better...have you finished the socks??

A hat might also be an easy option- there are loads on knittingpatterncentral.com and likely a few on ravelry too!
Lots can be done on two needles with simple knit/purl and only decrease when making brim!

Thanks for the ideas both of you. :A

Marie ... I am hanging my head in shame but no I haven't! :o:rotfl:
I just got fed up with them for some reason. I finally picked up a teacosy I made for my sister to sew it up and make pompoms - am such an eejit cos I sewed it up and forgot to leave gaps for the handle and spout! Have undone the sewing and am back to where I started, I did get the pompoms done though. So I think I'd best leave the sock alone till I have my thinking head on!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

thank you for helping me out :) ............ but ...........

the squares where they're ARENT any symbols....ie if they're empty....what stitch do i do in there? or is that where common sense is supposed to come in (which i've been told i dnt have any of lol!!) and just knit or purl them, depending on the pattern?

sorry if i sound dense, but i like to get my head round a pattern before i even attempt to knit it, as i'm still re-learning how to knit after a rather long break of 20 yrs!!!
I would imagine you knit on all the right side rows (normally 1,3,5 etc but if it is the even rows, which it sometimes can be, it should say on the pattern with (RS)), and purl on all the wrong side rows.
    HTH :D:D

Thanks all for the advice on finishing. My cushion is now complete and I'm really pleased with it. In Saturday's paper there were one of those articles about Christmas gifts recommending this

Well done on finishing your cushion. I am often amazed at the prices these things go for - this year I think I am going to try and make some stuff to sell (very MSE!), but wouldn't have the neck to try and charge that amount! ;) (Wish I could!)

I've always thought that it's quite difficult to knit to sell. I've had a couple of friends say they would pay me to make complicated tops for them but, realistically, if I charged for my time, it makes it far too expensive for it to be a viable business. But then I knit slowly being a newcomer and wouldn't charge pals anyway.
