I've just tried this with yazoo chocolate milk (made with uht) and it worked - think it could have done with leaving a bit longer though as it was a bit thinner than the one I made before with plain milk - tasted nice though!0

I've been making my own yog for about a year now in my electric yog maker. I strain mine for about 10 mins after its 'cooked' then put it in a container. If its for the grandkids I add a teaspoon of SPLENDA sweetener ( not the nasty aspartame type) this is then fine for them.
One thing I would ask, where can I find probiotic cultures to add to yog, even though its is 'live', its not probiotic, is it? and as I takr a lot of antibiotics at times, would like to add these for my 'gut flora'0 -
Right.
I won an Easiyo maker off Ebay and it arrived this morning.
I am interested in making my 'own' with out the need for packets.
Having read through all the treads I am very confussed.
Do I have to heat the uht milk up?
What exactly are the amounts of milk, dried milk powder and live yoghurt?
Does it work with normal milk or does it have to be uht?

mummyof3, this is what i do: (no, you don;t have to heat the milk, as long as its UHT - it's already been heated then)
i have an easiyo maker, but don't often use the sachets.
so, rather than buying the sachets (which cost about £1.50) you can still use the easiyo maker and make yoghurt without the sachets.
the easiest way to do this is:
a litre of UHT milk (skimmed, semi, or whole, depending on how healthy you want it)
a few tablespoons of skimmed milk powder (if you want creamier yog - i put 4 tablespoons in)
2 tablespoons of live yoghurt (must be live, and as fresh as possible - you can use yoghurt from your last batch, but every say 5 or 6 batches, start from fresh with a shop bought live starter.)
i 3/4 fill the inside jar of the easiyo (the clear one) with UHT skimmed milk. i then add 4 tblspoons of marvel type stuff (the value one though) and whisk it in with a fork.
then i add the 2 tablespoons of yoghurt and again use the fork to whisk it.
then fill it up to the top with UHT milk.
then you basically use the maker in the same way it says (filling the outside flask with boiling water and leaving it for 6 hours or more).
i find to make it thick enough you do need at lease 3 tablespoons of milk powder.
its very easy and i work it out as costing about 45p a kilo of yoghurt.
i mix in low sugar jam or fruit or whatever in if i want it flavoured!
hope that helps!!Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0 -

Thanks Rach. :T
My Easiyo arrived yesterday and I made my first batch of yoghurt last night using the powder that came with it. I thought I'd have to do a bit of a trawl through the thread to fnd out how to make another batch without powder but you've just made it really easy.
So another batch of yoghurt tonight then using some of the stuff I made yesterday. Although does it matter that I added sugar when I made it? I mean, can I still use it as a starter?Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts - DFW Nerd 323

Thanks for that.
However please help - what have I done wrong?
The Easiyo came with a yoghurt mix. I followed the instructions, made it at 9.oo last night.
Put it in the fridge this morning at 9.oo and come lunch time it was still runny!
Also one set of instuctions tells you to put the boiling water in the maker before putting the inner one in and another lot of instructions say to put it in after, which one is right?0 -
You should put the boiling water in first, before adding the yogurt mix. You can leave the mix for up to 24 hours to set and should do this before putting it in the fridge to chill. Don't know what went wrong here ... the only time it didn't work for me was when I accidently bought a yogurt drink instead of actual yogurt and, of course, it didn't set!Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0

If you put the water in after putting inner in , then you would not have put enough hot water in...thus it would not have kept as warm for the correct length of timeWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0
