I read through most of this thread the other day and am now going to attempt to make my own yoghurt. I have had an easiyo for over a year or so now, have used it, but not much lately as the packets are rather pricey, even though they are nice. After reading all of this and finding out you can make your own in it, even better. My kids aren't huge yogurt eaters, but they will eat it now and again. I eat it mostly.
However I wanted to know, is this okay to give a baby? I have a 9 month old, he is eating most things in general now, but I haven't given him any yoghurt at all yet.
I'm presuming it will be best to use whole uht milk in the kids yogurt? I'd use semi for myself and my partner. Or would semi be ok for them too, other than the baby?
I've ordered some semi and whole uht and some fat free and whole live yoghurt.. should I use normal yoghurt or fat free? or does it not matter?

Am looking forward to trying this. What would you use to flavour this?

    Thanks
    Yvonne

I think what's pointed out is it needs to be heated for 24 hours to make pro-biotic in that way, which an Easiyo wouldn't, mine was pretty cool after 12 hours when I made it.

Thanks for the info Organic Wanabe, much appreciated.

Thanks for that. I still dont understand why it doesnt recommend the easiyo method though. It has to be making the yoghurt otherwise it wouldnt go thick!

Also, even with an electric machine, its unlikely you would leave the yoghurt in for 24 hours as it would be too tangy!

I still feel ok using the easiyo, tastes and looks like yoghurt to me!

Semi-skimmed milk is fine to give to a baby. It has a slightly reduced fat content, but has more calcium in than whole milk. As long as the baby has fat in other items, such as cheese, and still drinks millk, it will be OK.

Does any one have any recipes for dips I can make the the litre of greek style yoghurt I made yesterday?

I'd like to try to make something similar to those fresh ones you get in the chiller counter - they come in a flat tray with 4 or 5 separate sections.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Two dips that I make, using any yogurt/creme fraiche etc
    1. Half a teaspoon of concentrated mint sauce.
    or
    2. An ounce of crumbled blue cheese.

Yoghourt has to be just about the easiest thing ever to make, I can't believe anyone would mess around with Easyyo. If you want your yoghourt creamier than the standard yoghourt just add 1 tablespoonful of skimmed milk powder per pint of milk at the start, before you heat the milk. Hey presto thick creamy (cheap) yoghourt!

How long does home made yoghurt last in the fridge? I made some on Sunday & have only had chance to eat one portion as I've been out all week!!

  • I sometimes keep my Easiyo yoghurt in the fridge for over a week and it still tastes OK - not quite as nice as it is when it is fresh but still edible and also OK for cooking with.
