Hi all,
I'm Sou (Mrs Slimshady)
I've been lurking here for a while and getting some great ideas re old style and moneysaving (hubby is more into the match betting!)
I've made my very first batch of yoghurt (very old style) with a free yoghurt maker (very money saving) but I need some ideas to persuade the family to eat any of it!
I used semi skimmed milk with yeo bio yoghurt as a starter. The yoghurt itself looks lovely (nice and thick) and I have been eating it mixed with banana as a kind of thick smoothie - delicious
BUT everyone else says it's too sour. I've tried it with sweetened tinned rhubarb (a very fetching delicate green colour), sweetened peach slices and of course the banana.
Any ideas on how to sweeten it for everyone else? Would using full cream milk make it any sweeter?
Thanks

My DS likes me to add some sugar so I add around just under 1 dessertspoon per litre and he scoffs it down.0

My absolute fave way of eating this is to put about a cupful in a bowl, mix in runny honey (about a dessertspoon) and then stir in Asda Raison, Honey and Almond Crunch (it's like Jordans Crunchy but much cheaper).
If it's really sour you might have left it a bit too long - next time try using semi skimmed UHT with a couple of spoonfuls of Marvel or something similar. I always do it this way and the result is really mild and creamy.
Happy yogging!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
We eat loads of yoghurt so have decided to try making it. Have sent for the Easiyo at QVC. This seems a good deal, thanks to the poster who mentioned it.0

I will try UHT next time - I used the semi skimmed normal milk and boiled it then let it cool (um..then had to microwave it because I'd forgotten about it and it had gone stone cold!!)organic_wanabe wrote:My DS likes me to add some sugar so I add around just under 1 dessertspoon per litre and he scoffs it down.
I assume that goes in at the end rather than during the yogging procedure?
Thanks for your ideas guys I will give them go and let you know how we all get on.

I've used Easiyo for about a year now.
Pro's:
Very very simple. The hardest thing is opening the packet of mix.
Quick - 6-8 hours and it's done, with no interaction needed.
Good range of flavours/styles of yoghurt.
Con's:
Can be a bit expensive to buy the necessary equipment.
Can be a bit expensive to buy the yoghurt powders. Both are available from ebay.
I've never tried any other way of making yoghurt, so I can't speak for how easy they are, but Easiyo is very very easy. You can buy bulk packs of the powders, which reduces the price a fair bit, and some of the flavoured one's are really nice.0 -
solomon_broad - i don;t know if you've read through the thread but lots of us use the easiyo system but not the sachets, great for making plain yog, a litre costs me about 40p. its worth a read as is no harder than the sachets.Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

slimshady, I add the sugar at the same time as the UHT milk, yoghurt culture and the skimmed milk powder.0
