I have a yogurt maker, I use 1ltr UHT Wholemilk, 150ml pot of yeo valley organic prebiotic yogurt, and 2 tablespoons of milk powder. I divide it into my 7 150ml pots put in my machine, switch on and it heats them for 14 hours. I put in the fridge for 24 hours it's a lovely creamy yogurt.
For 4-5 batches I'll use a leftover yogurt from the old batch as a starter yogurt instead of buying it.We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -

That's an Easiyo yoghurt maker. I have one of those, and it's basically an insulated flask. It's designed to be used with Easiyo yoghurt sachets, which contain powdered milk and yoghurt culture, so just need to be mixed with water. If you have the sachets, I think they have the instructions on them: IIRC you put them in the clear plastic container with the correct amount of water and shake until all the lumps are gone. You then put the correct amount of boiling water in the big white container, stick the clear container in, close it up and leave it for a good few hours. The Greek yoghurt version is lovely!
I don't know why it shouldn't work with "homemade" yoghurt mix rather than the sachets (i.e. mixing some live, plain yoghurt with warm milk. When I used to do this I either used to scald the milk first, or use UHT or watered down evaporated milk. The proportions don't seem to matter too much - I would think a good couple of spoonfuls would do it). It's really just a way of keeping the mixture warm until it turns into yoghurt.0 -
That reminds me. The UHT Milk and Yogurt should be at room temperature when you make it, it helps the cultures grow.
We sterilise everything, whisk ingredients together (electric whisk is best) and then divide into pots.We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. yes you can use just milk and some culture in an easiyo - as described above, most of a 1litre carton or UHT milk, small tub live yogurt, two tbsp milk powder help it thicken. Fill easiyo flask with boiling water to the line, put tub in, tighten lid. leave overnight. I find making from milk it's less sour than easiyo sachets, although I haven't tried the flavoured ones.0

I've never tried with set yoghurt and hadn't thought that it might encourage thickening. What brand of Greek set yoghurt do you use please?
