Don't be scared we are all pu55y cats here. You do have to be careful what you say because you can leave youorself open for a good 'flaming' (and Ivan should know) not because someone is plain nasty but just because they have read the post wrongly. It is only after you have been on chatboards for a while that you realise just how much we depend on hearing a tone of voice or a facial expression - neither of which is available on the web - except through smilies. The other thing to remember is that people have different senses of humour, come from different areas that have different slang and sometimes English is not necessarily a persons first language. Golden rule is don't take anything personally (if Ivan did he would be swinging from a rafter by now)
So join in big time .. you are going to have good days and you are going to have bad days (word of advice, don't go into 'Discussion Time' unless you have a very thick skin)
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
I too am glad I've been reading posts for a while. If this was my first time I would not use the site again. Deeds was quite clear both in her explanation and request for help and I cannot believe the things that have been written. Why do some people think they can be so rude and judgemental just because thye are on a chat forum?
It may be worth finding out what the 'good deal' they will offer you is. I'm sure Mum would like to see you with a nice piece of jewellery. maybe you could choose something that is a classic piece that you could wear occassionally. The shop may not remember your Mum having people with her and think she has bought them in now under false pretenses. Hope you get it sorted out.0 -
Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998 states:
Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers..............
Therefore, I can say what I wish. Just as you can.0 -
Could you not approach people in the shop looking to buy stuff and they 'buy' your credit note from you and then use it to buy their stuff?0

I am not passing judgement on anything posted here but can tell you that this is not a public authority but a private forum. Therefore, you have no freedom of expression. Martin decides what can and can't be posted and can remove posts if he wishes. He can also dictate what can be discussed and in what manner.0 -

Well said!! I must admit to re-reading my posts before I submit, simply to check if something I wrote is at least legible and unoffensive. And if I think my comment may be a little inflammatory, then I have the courtesy to say so, and dont expect others to agree.
I would not however, run around the boards criticising anothers personal life, and then start quoting the Human Rights Act. This is a forum for help, advice and general support, and yes, we all must get annoyed with some posts we read - I do myself - But I never have the nerve to do so.
If you dont have anything nice to say, or at least helpful, dont say it at all, and if you really must, stick to the damn subject.

I do agree that some of the posts here are quite sniping at the O.P. but I think we have got to remember that money issues are fundamentally related to morality and a persons values in life. To ask people to read something that they find offensive and not comment on it is rather one-sided.
(I use the term offensive because I think a lot of people, poor AND rich, would find the idea of spending £900 on a whim to be exactly that).
As far as the tsunami comments go though, !!!!!!?
But remember, stupidity has a part to play in building common sense. I'm sure O.P.'s mother won't be buying any £900 presents in the future.

I do agree with what you are saying Surfcat, I just feel that many people on these boards decide to criticise a post simply because of their morals and values. Whilst I appreciate that most people have different opinions on issues such as £900 pieces of jewellery, why is it that some feel the need to criticise, in what I would call an abusive manner? We simply dont go up to people on the street wearing £900 coats and criticise how they spend their money now do we!
My point was that we all have individual beliefs and values, and there is no need to run around criticising others for them, its not as if someone had bought a baby for £900, which would, to most I hope, be morally wrong. In the case of a £900 bracelet, then - who are we to judge or criticise? Would a £900 engagement ring have been different? Of course - many people buying a ring for thier intended may wish to ensure they could exchange or refund, incase it wasnt right, or didnt fit. And we would all go ahhhhhh, isnt that sweet - good luck on the proposals etc etc.
Similarly, religious beliefs vary from person to person, but it is offensive to go around criticising those beliefs. Why should it be different for £900? I personally have a bracelet that cost over £500,and yes, I barely wear it, but it was a gift, and in this case, I actually do love it, I just try and wear it for special occassions as I do not wish to lose it. Does the fact that I own a £500 bracelet mean that I should be criticised for it?? Of course not!!! For start - it was a gift, and I would not appreciate having my mother called an idiot or whatever for buying me a very generous and beautiful gift.
It would appear that I am advocating a degree of 'shaded' morality here, however, my intention was to state that in cases where people have 'disagreements' over the moral stance of a £900 bracelet for instance, then wouldnt it be easier to click 'back' on your browser and go read another post??? If you were speaking to the OP in person, who, say for instance, was your work colleague, then would you say the same thing?? No - of course you wouldnt, because it would be offensive and your colleagues would lose respect for you.
In the case of internet forums, many people seem to think that because they are behind a computer screen it gives licence to write exactly what you wish. Not so - there are abuse controllers for a reason, and the rules of the board clearly state that this is a place of help and support. If we wanted to debate the morality of jewellery, then set up your own thread, and dont be offensive to the OP. Quite simple really.

Edited: Surfcat "To ask people to read something that they find offensive and not comment on it is rather one-sided"
I was thinking of more offensive things than a bracelet there tbh! Its only in the last day or so ive started responding to 'offensive' posts, and I say this as it is frustrating to continually read posts that are completely off topic, and abusive to someone else, which I feel is a little unfair in this site. I dont expect people to read offensive posts and not respond, however, I dont feel the first post on this thread levelled by Daveboy at the OP was at all fair, as it was irrelevant in context.#KiamaHouse0 -
So what is a forum if people can't say what they think?
The Human Rights Act refers to people not being punished by the authorities for their views (note the word interference).
If Martin wishes to be in the pocket of one Tony Blair then he'll need a law change before I stop saying what I think - and even then I'll challenge it.
I've not challenged your right to say what your view is - so don't bother challenging mine.0 -
daveboy wrote:So what is a forum if people can't say what they think?
The forums are for people to seek support & advice on primarily financial matters.
They are not a playground for insensitive morons to set themselves up as some moral authority, deciding who does and does not deserve assistance.
To the OP. If you cannot get the company to provide a refund, your only other recourse would be a small claims court action. Unfortunately I doubt such an action would be successful.0
