Seems to me some people are missing the point a bit. The Op didn't post to ask everyone for their opinions on her gift/her Mother's generosity/her reaction to it. She posted because she felt her Mother was misled by the person that sold to her and she's asking if anything can be done.
Perhaps it would be better if there was less sniping and more advice. Remember Martin's words of wisdom.....Please be nice to other moneysavers.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Seems to me that I have the right to say what my opinion is.0

We all have the right to give our opinion..you have to take criticism if you ask0

I agree Kimberley, we gave our opinion, if the original poster doesn't like it then that is unfortunate. As for it not being 'our' business, when you post on a public forum then it becomes the business of the public.~What you send out comes back to thee thricefold!~~0

Thats exactly right Ember :beer:0 -

What exactly did the OP ask, Kimberley?
I thought it was a question about 'could anything else be done'.
If the Op had said 'what does everyone else think', then I would support everyone who answered (in any way). That wasn't the case though.
I agree that if a post is made on a public forum, then it is open to debate....however surely points can be made without resorting to insults such as in daveboy's post?Herman - MP for all!0 -
Well it did seem a bit harsh i guess0

Personally, if I was spending that sort of money, I'd want any sort of guarantee like that in writing. Mind you, if I was spending that much on something, I'd make sure it was what they wanted before I buy.
If you don't know what to do with the money, donate it to charity. You'll feel good and the charity will benefit (eg they could hold a raffle with that as a prize).
If you don't know of any deserving charities that could do with it, the one I do voluntary work for is always short of money, and would love any help they could get. £900 could buy us about 6 months supply of leaflets to let people know of our services.0 -
I would be more worried about how long the credit note has to run, as alot of them only last for 6 months, and as for people dieing after christmas, people die every day. So I don't see what it has to do with this thread
Are you trying to say its deeds fault. I know , so when anyone dies from now on, everyone who has any problems with companies is expected to let it go  You don't work for Toys R Us do you Daveboy

Jeez people, I am the first to say to keep things in perspective but some of the answers here are totally ridiculous. I think some people are having a problem getting past the monetary value of the present and are commenting purely from that point of view. Would the OP have got the same responses if it had have been a bracelet worth £19.99 ? I think some of you owe the OP an apology.
Onto the point in hand. As others have said there is a difference in what people say versus what people do ... unfortunately in some circumstances it has been known for people to make things up to get their own way (hence why we have a set of laws and guidelines) ... in this case the guildeline is that the shop only needs to offer a credit to meet their obligations.
The other thing was the curse of the mobile phone. Nobody ever 'HAS' to take a call ... your mum could have chosen to ignore it and phone back 5 minutes later (which is probably what she would have done had she been sitting on the loo). She unfortunately took her eye of the ball and this is what has happened.
Have you tried to negotiate maybe for spending a proportion of the money (e.g. 50%) in their shop and getting the remainder refunded (as a gesture of good will). Try this as a proposal otherwise say that you will have no choice but to go to small claims ... unfortunately I believe that under law the shop is within its rights.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0
