We've got DD's friend over today until 6pm, so lunch and dinner required. I knew she had quite a strict diet but didn't realise how strict. The things I had planned that I thought would be safe aren't. She is a pescatarian, who doesn't have sugar, wheat (only eats rye bread but can sometimes have wholemeal pasta), is allergic to mushrooms and doesn't have lactose so only has rice milk and minimal cheese. Mum has brought snacks of specialist yoghurt and oatcakes.

I was going to give them houmous with pepper, cucumber and wholemeal toast to dip for lunch but she doesn't like houmous. Dinner is sorted I think as breadcrumbing some white fish with potato wedges. But will she want a sauce? I don't want to make her feel bad with all the questions as she already looked sad when I asked her if she wanted a drink and she said yes but I can only have water.

    Any suggestions?!

  • Wow, that's tricky. To be honest if that was my child, i'd send her with a packed lunch (not just yoghurt and oatcakes) or at least a list of ok food a few days in advance so you can prepare. Sorry no suggestions. Well, an apple maybe?

its difficult isnt it, can sympathise as my 2 year old grandaughter has a number of allergies and it can be a minefield. Could you ring her mum and ask what she normally gives her daughter for lunch, dinner etc?

I noticed you said you were giving her breadcrumbed fish for dinner, you will need to check they are wheat free unless you are making them yourself from her rye bread etc. also check the pack of wedges as the coatings sometimes have wheat flour - the hospital advised making jacket wedges from sweet potato for grandaughter. I was quite shocked when we started checking food labels as to how many products have added wheat, sugar and milk products when the homemade version wouldnt.

Can she eat eggs? maybe a poached egg on some ryebread for lunch or some soup.
  • Sorry to upset your dinner, but check the breadcrumbs for wheat... (sorry, cross posted)

With that restricted a diet she will be used to not being able to eat like everyone else. I'd just made sure I had lots of veggies (raw carrot, cauli, baby sweetcorn, green beans are all tasty for dipping too) in the house and she can have them without the dip for lunch and to added to her tea if there is anything she can't have there. If she is adding not liking things to her long list of things she is allergic to and banned from then she has to expect food to be a bit dull...

I agree with that list of requriements I'd send a packed lunch with my child and give some suggestions for easy dinners - either that or separate what she mustn't have because of a dangerous allergy (and insist that was avoided) and what I didn't want her to have (intolerance/preference) and accept that that might be served.

I'd do a baked potato with tuna for lunch and fried rice for tea!

Wholemeal toast is wheat as is breaded fish....

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought about eggs at all! I make the breaded fish from scratch anyway so was just going to use rye bread or oats and homemade wedges (just wedge shaped potato slices cooked in olive oil).

It was a bit of a last minute playdate as I only texted her yesterday morning to ask if she wanted to come and play. Her mum is working all day today so she usually goes to holiday club hence why it's all day (arrived at 8 this morning). From what her mum and she has said, it is not a wheat allergy as such just that she tries to limit her intake to prevent recurring yeast infections.

I'd do salmon ( you can buy fairly cheap bits of salmon frozen and then they only take 3 mins in the microwave) with plain boiled veg and potatoes for a hot meal.

Then, I'd make sure I had plenty of fruit and veg in the house for her to snack on.

To be honest, I'd also make sure that I knew what on that huge list she was actually *allergic* to. I'd make sure she didn't eat anything she was actually allergic to and do my level best to make sure I could offer her things that were within her limited choice. But to be honest, with such a limited repetoire, she is going to have to be used to either not eating much of anything interesting or occasionally accidentally eating something outwith her strict remit. If I accidentally gave her something she wasn't meant to eat, I'd not stress over it too much.

Now trying to find a recipe for HM ketchup that doesn't require a vast array of ingredients that I don't have. I've got tinned toms, tomato puree, garlic, english mustard, olive oil. But all the ones I've seen so far require mustard powder, cider vinegar, dill etc etc!

Ok, breaded fish is out. Just checked and she doesn't like it. She said she doesn't really like plain fish either. She does like tomatoey things though.

She does like boiled eggs (though not other types of egg).
