sometimes the MOT runs out whilst the car tax is still on. should we have the car re-Motted BEFORE the tax disk runs out or can this be done as and when we need to renew the MOT. just a debate partner and i have ! thanks

Maybe this will make this clearer to *******connor, the MOT gets renewed when it is due,

** Connor, if you would care to discuss this with me privately them pm me, I find your manner very offensive, but feel you may have picked on the wrong person.

    Calm down, calm down.

    Answer is:

When MOT runs out renew it.

When Tax runs out renew it.

When insurance runs out renew it.

Treat all three above separately. It will avoid confusion - even if any/and or all of them need renewing at the same time.

My road tax is due slightly after my MOT. I aim to get the MOT done before renewing the tax, so I know the car is worth taxing (I try to check MOT points on my car, but not being an official MOT tester there may be things I miss). Otherwise if you tax it you lose a month's road tax when you get the refund.

Thanks jeannie, it really is so simple:T

But don#'t you get a reminder for the MOT, could it be that the authorities consider it to be a lesser offence, yes, I think it could be, in a road worthy condition is much more important.

Reminder, the MOT is applicable on the day of the test.

In a road worthy condition is all the time.
    Easy, yeah?

Funnily enough, I had l this debate with my insurance company [Highway] their answer was an emphatic NO MOT = Cover invalid.

Well I think it was you who was misinformed, unless they have in their policy the word MOT specifically mentioned. You should have asked them "under what condition in the policy?" And then made the point an MOT is not a test of roadworthyness and in any event is only an indicator at the time of the test, one hour later (having passed) it could fail an MOT.

They have a policy which says (every policy I have ever seen) "must be in a roadworthy condition."

An MOT or lack of is no indication of roadworthyness. Insurance companies cannot just invent policy terms arbitrarily, if it is not in the policy then they cannot invent it to suit themselves. The only way they can find if the car was roadworthy is by inspection.

The same applies for VED, I suppose you think no VED = no insurance aswell :rotfl::rotfl:
As to the route to an MOT station, for a vehicle I suggest some of you read the authentic Road Traffic Act. not a digest.
Its something I have to do all the time with unregistered ,un MOT'd vehicles, in order to qualify for a registration mark.
Oh really? and I suppose you know what the chapter and section is? .......... I'll give you a clue... you won't find it in the Road Traffic Act.
    What is required is insurance.
I arrange insurance, but it is valid minimum 3rd party cover only for the duration of that trip, which is all that the insurance co will grant in these circumstances.
Any one who knows of a company that will issue full comp insurance for an untaxed unregistered un MOT'd vehicle on its way to a test, in order to qualify for these items will they please let me know?
All insurance companies will cover you mid term for this eventuality. Any insurance company has the right to accept or decline a new policy, so if you are starting a new policy and it is only a temporary cover being sought for a trip to the mot station, then they have the right to refuse cover, but I am surprised you could find no cover for comp, there would be a company somewhere willing to do it I'm sure.

Think so many people would love to get a reminder for the MOT like you do the Tax.... which is why you get so many going - oh, my MOT ran out two months or so ago.

Trouble is, now its all computerised - if the police put in your reg - it shows if you have MOT, tax and insurance. No grace like you used to get.

For me it is easy in sense that MOT and tax are due at end of same month and do both about 2-3 weeks before due. Insurance - well, I get a reminder.

The law is not really that clear and insurance companies can be vague - but I've always understood it that if you drive without a valid MOT, it would invalidate your insurance. Either way, I wouldn't take the risk. Whether tax is due a few weeks later or not - which I think the OP was asking.

Just renew it when due - and tax when due. Its not rocket science....
