No MOT is an offence, no matter how much tax is left.
    No MOT = insurance VOID
when the MOT runs out you renew it, it has no connection with the road tax issue.
No MOT =big fine+aggro and as they are all computerised these days you can be spotted on camera.
Sensible folk get their MOT renewed at least a month before the old one expires, then the remaining month will be transferred to your new one, so you get a 13 month certificate.
Plus it gives you a month to sort it out, and you still have use of the car.

If you can, take it to a no pass no fee MOT station, as there is less and less leeway these days, and you get charged again on retests.

    Hi.
Your car needs to have a current MOT whenever it is on the road. You can take your car for an mot at any time, but best done about a month before it ends as the unexpired days (up to a maximum of a month) can be added to the new mot and you have time to get any repairs done if it fails. You will need a current mot to tax the car.
If you've got more than a month before it expires, it will not need doing just for taxing.

    FOR CHRIST SAKE...

THERE IS NO DEBATE. THE LAW REQUIRES THAT ALL CARS OVER 3 YEARS OLD HAVE A CURRENT VALID MOT TO BE USED ON THE ROAD.

So if you haven't and the Police stop you, which is likely now MOT's are computerised, expect a trip to the Magistrates Court.

You must re-new your MOT when it expires, best to get it done a week or two in advance in case there is work needing done.

But you can arrange an MOT test at any time so long as you have a current certificate. If say, you would rather your tax and MOT expired at different times.

But no, you can't wait till your tax expires to renew your MOT if it has expired.

As long as your MOT is valid on the day the tax is due to start then the Post Office MUST accept the MOT, even if it expires the next day.

Though I do know that PO's have said this to people

Its not just the post office's. If you try to renew your tax online and only a few weeks or so left on MOT then you will find it will be refused. You can't blame them at the post office for that - its all computerised and VOSA have strict rules that have to be abided by.

You can renew you MOT four weeks in advance, many MOT's are not in line date wise with tax for re renewal. Renew insurance, tax and MOT when they are due annually and/or biannually for tax perhaps, treat them independently and you will not fall foul of the law.

Its handy if they all come up at the same time, but thats life.........
