………No MOT = insurance VOID……………If you can, take it to a no pass no fee MOT station……..

Does anyone actually have a policy that says “No MOT=No insurance” rather than “cars must kept in a roadworthy condition”?

    And…..

Does anyone know of a “no pass no fee” MOT station?

The advantage of having MOT & tax at the same time is you get a reminder from DVLC when they are due so no chance of forgetting the MOT

Obviously the disadvantage is that you have to pay for both at the same time

No pass no fee? To be honest, I'd worry about that and surely that must be against VOSA rules??

Can you help the lady re the C Max thread? Prob shouldn't ask on this thread, but what the hell, live dangerously. I reckon transmission would be what I would call 'proper automatic'! Not the new silly ones that are about..:A

    Hi.
Your car needs to have a current MOT whenever it is on the road. You can take your car for an mot at any time, but best done about a month before it ends as the unexpired days (up to a maximum of a month) can be added to the new mot and you have time to get any repairs done if it fails.

I thought at the point a car fails the MOT test, the current MOT certificate ceases to be valid - getting the car testing before the end of the current MOT does not give you a grace period to get any repairs done.

I've had a quick look on the DoT website, but can't see anything to confirm or deny this?

Don't quote me, but think that if vehicle fails MOT but existing one say doesn't end for another couple of weeks you are ok.

Will find out a work tomorrow.

It’s two separate offences, cars need to be roadworthy and have a valid MOT

The current certificate isn't invalidated but depending on the fault, the vehicle could be illegal to use on the road until it's rectified. For example:

Split CV boot - MOT fail but still legal to use car.
Blown brake light bulb - MOT fail and not legal to use car until rectified.

One blown brake light: advisory (if you were stopped, but an MOT failure, of course).
Two blown brake lights - immediate prohibition (if stopped).

One blown side marker light, in the hours of darkness, unable to show the width of the vehicle - immediate prohibition (if stopped).

It depends on lots of factors:
Your MOT expires 28th Feb 2008.
You take you car for test 14th Feb 2008.
    It fails.
You get stopped on 25th Feb 2008.
You have a valid MOT regardless of the failure on 14th Feb 2008. You cannot be prosecuted for no MOT.
However, you could potentially be prosecuted for dangerous condition or similar if the car failed on something that was inherently dangerous, i.e. tyres worn below legal limit.

It's not always cut and dried.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
