Pay As You Go Mobile £9 delivered

UPDATE 31 Jan 12pm. After it went in the weekly email this mobile has been in and out of stock. It's currently in stock again but if it goes out of stock you may be able to pick one up in store, but ring to check before you make the journey.

What's the deal?

Asda is currently offering a Pay as you go mobile phone on its Asda Mobile tariff (which works on the Vodafone network) for £9 including delivery. Plus, register the phone with Asda by calling the helpline and you'll get 75p free credit (the call costs 25p but you'll get £1 credited to the phone).

Sounds good, what's it like?

At this price it won't have the most up-to-date features on it, for what it's got you can't go far wrong if it's a basic phone you want and a little camera for just in case moments.

The phone is an Alcatel OT-C550, comes in black, and features include:

Dual band
Camera
GPRS
WAP
Polyphonic Ringtones
6 hours talktime and up to 300 hours standby time

How much will calls/texts cost me?

For making calls to any network or landline you'll be charged 16p per minute for the first three minutes of the day then 8p per minute for the rest of the day.

The first three texts sent each day cost 10p each. Any more after that will be 5p each.

Picture messages cost 25p to send and GPRS costs 0.4p per KB (a quite hefty £4.09/mb, so don't use it to download things).

Topping up

The minimum the phone can be topped up with is £5 yet do this either via the helpline using your registered credit or debit card, or in an Asda, George, or Asda Living store and you'll get an additional 10% of your chosen top-up amount.

What's the catch?

The terms and conditions state you mustn't go more than 180 days without either topping up or making a chargeable call (that doesn't include a call to the Asda Mobile helpline) but if you are planning just to use it for emergencies simply put a note in your diary to make one of your normal phone calls in, say, five months' time using the phone and Bob's your uncle!

Can it be unlocked?

Unlocking would allow you to shove your current sim card in the phone see the unlock your mobile for free. At the moment it seems that the handset can't be unlocked but as Asda's mobile network is supported by Vodafone you should be able to pop a Vodafone sim in there. If you know how to unlock the phone click reply and post below!

Does dual band mean that I could use say in Afghanistan or the US?
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives
call your credit card company, tell them that you want to leave, 99% of the time theyll lower your APR%
Remember when that Bank Manager or Salesperson smiles at you, all he sees is £ notes. Dont forget the motto, "the wider their grin, the more debt your in"

Hi Jinkssick you'll need a tri-band for the US not dual band. Not sure about Afghanistan but wouldn't recommend it as a holiday destination!
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

    1) Asda mobile runs on the vodafone network so you'll get the same level of coverage as a vodafone customer - so why bother with a Vodafone SIM?

    2) Asda mobile is cheap!, very cheap.... Calls are 16p for first 3 minutes, then half price at 8p minute X-net all day / Text are 10p for first 3 then half price at 5p for rest of day.... so that it just amazing value for PAYG...

I use Asda mobile and have been since last June... If I top up using my credit card over the phone (or via the app on the Sim card, which is also easy) then Asda give me 10% bonus top-up for FREE... I usually put £50 every couple of months and Asda adds to this £5 Free...

Well done Asda this is brill. :money: I say get your number ported to Asda mobile and save a bit of dosh now !
  • I am on the site now, and the phone is visible and it has allowed me to add to my basket......
  • And in fact I have now bought one for my mum.
  • Can you use the vodafone stop the clock on this?

Hi, I just ordered mine with no problems at 9am on Wednesday. This mobile does NOT have Bluetooth which is a pity, otherwise it's a great deal.
