  • I went to order earlier but putoff by the Data protection section on Asda order page. I wasn't happy I could clearly decline junkmail.

No, you can bring your old number with you if you want. Get a SIM for the new network (will come with this phone). Then ring up your old network and ask for a PAC, a Porting Authentication Code. Give this number to your new network and they'll move your old number to your new phone. Can take a few days, so it might be good to keep both phones switched on as you don't know which SIM people will be calling you on until the change goes through.

Moneysaving Tip: from landlines it's often cheaper to ring numbers originally issued by O2 than other networks (especially Three who are much more expensive than the rest). But if you port a number the rate to ring from landlines is based on where it originally came from, not where it is now. So to make it as cheap as possible for people to call you, grab an O2 SIM and port the number across to your chosen network. The mobile networks will know where your number really is (so won't get charged X-net unless you actually are) but landlines will always think you're on O2 and charge the cheaper rate.

Many thanks for your help. Although looking at the postings, I'm too late to order a phone but at least I'll know when anything else comes up

    Kind regards

asda in bangor n.ireland has some, just got myself 2
  • Thanks for this great bargain, I've just ordered one for myself.

Since I very rarely use my mobile and only really keep it for emergencies, by cancelling my existing contract I've now saved myself about fifteen quid a month:j

Plus...as an unexpected side bonus... I'd accidentally entered a wrong digit in my credit card payment so it wasn't 'taking it' at first, and I rang my bank to check all was okay. That led to chatting with the bank advisor about my account in general, and it promoted me to cancel a premium I was paying for one of my accounts since I wasn't really using the benefits, and switching to their internet banking service - earning a higher interest rate on my little bit of savings!

So.. I've not only saved 15 pounds a month on my mobile phone, but saved an additional 15 pounds a month on my bank charge - and moved up to higher interest rate as well.

All that from reading just one e-mail about a bargain mobile phone... MoneySavingExpert rocks!:T

I just had a quick look at the phone specs. Apparently, it doesn't have a USB port, or a slot for memory cards. If I can't get the photos off, then the camera is off no use to me!

I ordered one early yesterday, turned up this morning via Special Delivery. I just popped a BT SIM in and it works fine - so actually I think these are unlocked unless there's some link between Asda or Vodafone and BT?

EDIT: Tried a Virgin SIM and it's definitely locked so wrong information - sorry!

BT mobile and ASDA mobile both use Vodafone's network, so maybe not unlocked.

Sadly yes you are quite correct - I never thought of BT as being part of Vodafone. Inserting a Virgin SIM prompted the phone to ask me for a NCK code so no my answer is wrong - it is definitely NOT unlocked!

I'm not quite sure what you are expecting for £9 including delivery?

If you want everything on your phone, then you need to up your spending limit to a more realistic level.

As to the questions about it being unlocked, it is definitely locked to Vodafone, but it is not GID locked, so it will use sims from any service provider that piggy backs on Vodafone.

I managed to get through the Asda "security" and get a couple on the staff pre Christmas offer. They are decent phones and they look pretty good for a cheapy phone, a little bit like a SE K800i.

There isn't a free unlock solution, so either get used to using them on Voda, Asda, BT etc or pay to have them unlocked.
